Historia
As a girl, Genevieve Martin spent the happiest summer of her life in Paris, learning the delicate art of locksmithing at her uncle's side. But since then, living back in the States, she has become more private, more subdued. She has been an observer of life rather than an active participant, holding herself back from those around her, including her soon-to-be ex-husband. Paris never really left Genevieve, and, as her marriage crumbles, she finds herself faced with an incredible opportunity.

Long, lonely years have passed for the crumbling Château Clement, nestled well beyond the rolling lavender fields and popular tourist attractions of Provence. Once a bustling and dignified ancestral estate, now all that remains is the château's gruff, elderly owner and the softly whispered secrets of generations buried and forgotten. But time has a way of exposing history's dark stains, and when American photographer Cady Drake finds herself drawn to the château and its antique carousel, she longs to explore the relic's shadowy origins.

Resumen del Editor
At 10, painting a perfect Mona Lisa made Annie Kincaid a prodigy. A similar copy at 17 made her a crook. Lesson learned: genuine art is priceless, and forgery gets you arrested. Now Annie puts her artistic talents to honest use as a faux finisher in San Francisco. But her past may not be painted over as well as she thought....
Annie's got bad news for her ex-boyfriend, curator Ernst Pettigrew: the snooty Brock Museum's new 15-million-dollar Caravaggio painting is as fake as a three-dollar bill. And the same night Annie makes her shattering appraisal, the janitor on duty is killed - and Ernst disappears. To top it all off, a well-known art dealer has absconded with multiple Old Master drawings, leaving yet more forgeries in their places. Finding the originals - and pocketing the reward money - will get Annie's new landlord off her back. But it could also draw her into the underworld of fakes and forgers she swore she'd left behind, starting with a close encounter with a changeable but charming art thief....

A little hard to follow
There was a lot going on in this book. The main character is a bit of a dingbat and makes unwise decisions. The narrator's voice is low and sleepy in some places and it was easy to lose interest. I'm not sure if I'll listen to the next one.

Light and Entertaining
The characters are entertaining, but not well-developed -- not even the protagonist. I was looking for company in the car during a period when I was doing a lot more driving than usual, and this provided that. It made me laugh at times and I even wondered briefly how it would all come out. I am listening to thrillers and mysteries right now and may be ready for a break -- in which case I may try another by this team.

Absolutely wonderful journey
Loved this book. Strong plot, well written, and thoroughly entertaining. Juliet Blackwell takes the reader on a wild ride through the intrigues of art forgery and appreciation. Well-fleshed characters help make this book a joy to read and Xe Sands brings these characters to life.
Looking forward to listening to the next book in the series.

Monotone narration
While the plot was fair, the narration provided little variance between characters. It was like the narrator was simply reading the book outloud.

beware of narration, uncomfortable stereotypes
It's obvious that there are plenty of listeners who don't mind, and even really enjoy this narrator's style but I am not one of them. I still took a chance on this book because of the positive reviews and the topic is so unique in the world of cozy mysteries. People who have never heard Xe Sands should definitely listen to the sample before purchasing though. The story was interesting and fun. I liked Annie's intelligence and competence. Something that shocked me, however, was how Annie describes the one African-American character (this is one of those books that spells out for you when someone is not white) as the "African Princess" not just once but repeatedly. Why??!

A Delightful Spin-Off
This/these authors wrote a delightful cozy mystery with some overlap in characters from Juliet Blackwell’s Witchcraft Mystery series.
This story centers around Annie Kincaid, a young woman who has a sealed juvenile record as an art forger in France. Back home, a bit older and wiser, Annie has established herself as a faux-finish painting contractor who occasionally paints original portraits. Doing her best to lead a crime-free life, there isn’t a lot of money in her bank account when she learns her new landlord plans to double her rent!
An old flame calls her and asks her to verify the provenance of an historic painting. But the work is a fake. Worse yet, she knows the forger!
Juliet Blackwell, writing as Hailey Lind, has crafted a delightful read that is full of humor. The plot is part thriller and part cozy mystery. Narrator, Xe Sands, brings this story to life with her delightful narration.

Artfully Written
I wasn’t sure about this book at first, but it grew on me. The art world is familiar to only the elite, but the protagonist was such an interesting character I had to continue listening, and what a great ending!
