As a 14-year-old who just moved to a new town, with no friends and a louse for an older brother, Doug Swieteck has all the stats stacked against him. 1987. There’s only one person who has ever truly understood fourteen-year-old June Elbus, and that’s her uncle, the renowned painter Finn Weiss. Shy at school and distant from her older sister, June can only be herself in Finn’s company; he is her godfather, confidant, and best friend. So when he dies, far too young, of a mysterious illness her mother can barely speak about, June’s world is turned upside down. But Finn’s death brings a surprise acquaintance into June’s life - someone who will help her to heal....

It sucks being with Grandpa in this new town. It sucks that they left the old place without finding Rosco. Travis doesn’t want to do anything, especially try to get by in his classes, which never seems possible, anyway. He’s a Bluefish - stupid, angry, alone. Then, suddenly, there’s a girl. Velveeta. She’s up in his face and she’s not backing down. She is as loud as he is quiet, as outgoing as he is shut in. She’s pretty, in a funky, scarf-wearing sort of way, and she’s smart - way smart - smart enough to figure out that Travis has a secret.

When Haven Kimmel was born in 1965, Mooreland, Indiana, was a sleepy little hamlet of 300 people. Nicknamed "Zippy" for the way she would bolt around the house, this small girl was possessed of big eyes and even bigger ears. In this witty and lovingly told memoir, Kimmel takes readers back to a time when small-town America was caught in the amber of the innocent postwar period - people helped their neighbors, went to church on Sunday, and kept barnyard animals in their backyards.

A distinctive new voice: Rex Ogle's story of starting middle school on the free lunch program is timely, heartbreaking, and true. Free Lunch is the story of Rex Ogle's first semester in sixth grade. Rex and his baby brother often went hungry, wore secondhand clothes, and were short of school supplies, and Rex was on his school's free lunch program. Grounded in the immediacy of physical hunger and the humiliation of having to announce it every day in the school lunch line, Rex's is a compelling story of a more profound hunger - that of a child for his parents' love and care.

Devastingly Beautiful
Orbiting Jupiter is like nothing I've ever read before. The author writes in such a way that you find yourself mesmerized, flowing along with the story like on a calm river. The characters are so relatable that you feel like you know them intimately, almost from the beginning of the book, yet Schmidt gives little to no background on them. You simply find you understand them based on their actions alone. Orbiting Jupiter is a quick read, but it will leave you feeling as though you've spent a lifetime with the characters in it. I highly, highly recommend it.

Where fear and pain turns to friendship and love
I could not put the book down! The narrator, Christopher Gebauer read with such emotion as he unfolded the story around Jack and Joseph. I felt I was there with the teenager, in their classroom, in the barn and walking home in the below zero degree weather. I was moved by the characters and by the 'voice' the narrator gave them. Loved it!

wow
Amazing plot. I could do so much with this with my 6th graders, but not sure that the parents would approve of the story line. :(

Oh My God!
Where are the angels? Seriously! This is one of the best heart breaking stories I have ever read! I love and hate it! A kid having a kid only to loose the mother and then to have his daughter taken from him. Not to mention he was abused at home. He loved Maddie so much, and just wants to see his daughter! Just see her! They named her Jupiter, being their favorite planet! They loved each other so very much and Jupiter was a beautiful baby! He goes through so much for his daughter! And, well, you have to read it! You have to!
