Historia
Seventy years ago, Joe Rubinstein walked out of a Nazi concentration camp. Until now, his story has been hidden from the world. Shortly before dawn on a frigid morning in Radom, Poland, 21-year-old Joe answered a knock at the door of the cottage he shared with his widowed mother and siblings. German soldiers forced him onto a crowded open-air truck. Wearing only an undershirt and shorts, Joe was left on the truck with no protection from the cold. By the next morning, several around him would be dead. From there, things got worse for young Joe, much worse.

For half a century, a terrible secret lay hidden, locked in a trunk in an attic... photos, official documents, and scraps of a diary written by a young girl. "The time has come when I must share my life story... some facts from the past that could make a contribution, however small it may be, to the history of mankind." The Secret Holocaust Diaries is a haunting eyewitness account of Nonna Lisowskaja Bannister, a remarkable Russian-American woman who saw and survived unspeakable evils as a young girl.

In the summer of 1942, the Rabinowitz family narrowly escaped the Nazi ghetto in their Polish town by fleeing to the forbidding Bialowieza Forest. They miraculously survived two years in the woods—through brutal winters, Typhus outbreaks, and merciless Nazi raids—until they were liberated by the Red Army in 1944. After the war, they trekked across the Alps into Italy, where they settled as refugees before eventually immigrating to the United States.

The Long Night is Ernst Israel Bornstein's first-hand account of what he witnessed in seven concentration camps. Written with remarkable insight and raw emotion, The Long Night paints a portrait of human psychology in the darkest of times. Historia
On a sunny morning in May 1939, a phalanx of 867 women - housewives, doctors, opera singers, politicians, prostitutes - was marched through the woods 50 miles north of Berlin, driven on past a shining lake, then herded in through giant gates. Whipping and kicking them were scores of German women guards. Their destination was Ravensbrück, a concentration camp designed specifically for women by Heinrich Himmler, prime architect of the Holocaust.

Historia
In March 1942, 25-year-old kindergarten teacher Magda Hellinger and nearly a thousand other young women were deported as some of the first Jews to be sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. The SS soon discovered that by putting prisoners in charge of the day-to-day accommodation blocks, they could deflect attention away from themselves. Magda was one such prisoner selected for leadership and put in charge of hundreds of women in the notorious Experimental Block 10. She found herself constantly walking a dangerously fine line: saving lives while avoiding suspicion by the SS.

This haunting memoir tells the brutal story of the Vietnam War from the perspective of an innocent victim whose childhood was dominated by violence, devastation, and conflicts between the teachings of her culture and the realities of war. The youngest in a close-knit Buddhist family, Le Ly Hayslip was 12 years old when U.S. helicopters landed in her village. She was raped and "ruined" for marriage by Viet Cong soldiers, imprisoned and tortured by the South Vietnamese, and sentenced to death by the Viet Cong. Ultimately fleeing to the U.S. with her children, she finally found peace, and in 1986, she was reunited with her family in Vietnam. The story of her homecoming, interwoven with her memories of the war years, paints a vivid picture of a noble, optimistic woman and her native country.

In her powerful, illuminating, and sometimes frightening memoir, Hunt recounts a youth lived under an evil but persuasive leader. As she grew older, the harsh reality of war - and a few brave adults who opposed the Nazi regime - aroused in her skepticism of National Socialist ideology and the Nazi propaganda she was taught to believe in.

Country of Ash is the starkly compelling, original chronicle of a Jewish doctor who miraculously survived near-certain death, first inside the Lodz and Warsaw ghettoes, where he was forced to treat the Gestapo, then on the Aryan side of Warsaw, where he hid under numerous disguises. He clandestinely recorded the terrible events he witnessed, but his manuscript disappeared during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. After the war, reunited with his wife and young daughter, he rewrote his story.

April 7, 1944 - This date marks the successful escape of two Slovak prisoners from one of the most heavily-guarded and notorious concentration camps of Nazi Germany. The escapees, Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler, fled over 100 miles to be the first to give the graphic and detailed descriptions of the atrocities of Auschwitz. Originally published in the early 1960s, I Escaped from Auschwitz is the striking autobiography of none other than Rudolf Vrba himself. This story is dedicated to all the victims of sexual slavery in German concentration camps, who had to endure inhumane suffering under the Nazi regime. For many years after the atrocities had been committed, both sides - the abusers and the abused - still vehemently denied certain aspects of the Holocaust, and even the victims refused to admit the ugly truth about their incarceration, some out of fear, some out of shame, until several women decided to break an unofficial oath of silence, and brought their stories to life. This book is based on one of those stories. Emilia is a young Jewish woman, whose life slowly turns into a nightmare as she finds herself facing a dreadful choice: to secure her family's very existence by offering herself to one of the men who had put her behind the walls with barbed wire, or perish together with the least fortunate ones.

A nice change
Would you consider the audio edition of The Nazi Officer's Wife to be better than the print version?
Only because of the added animated narration, I would definately say the audiobook is better than just the book alone though I haven't read the book by itself.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Edith was my favorite character, of course; the woman who wrote the story. Sic a silly question for a biography, haha. Her perseverance throughout all of the hardships she endured makes her a strong woman.
Which character – as performed by Barbara Rosenblat – was your favorite?
This is impossible to answer because each character had their own part that brought the sort to life.
Who was the most memorable character of The Nazi Officer's Wife and why?
Edith and Pepe were the most memoable. Edith, as she had lived in every page and Pepe because of how much you wanted to smack him around a bit for being such a mama's boy.
Any additional comments?
This is by far the best book and most memorable that I have read this year. While most other a holocaust books take you into concentration camps and leave you feeling mad or sorry, this book has enough humor and moments where you're reminded that not all Germans were as hostile as the nazis in the camps were made out to be. Though Edith's life was far from easy during this time, and she had to fight to survive, it's a nice change readin about someone who had just an ounce of freedom while lving under the radar instead of leading a life in Auchwitz.

A Definite Must
I have certainly read many accounts of the holocaust years. Sometimes I have thought I should be finished reading them, because the story has been told now, and it may not be healthy for me to dwell upon it time after time. But The Officer's Wife" has taught me that the story must be to told again and again. Itis as rich as the multitude of people who experienced it. I learned a great deal from the telling of this participant. I learned the heroic efforts of both victims and members of the dominant population. I learned how greatly small and seemingly meaningless efforts of kindness affect the world ever after. I am grateful for the insights conveyed by reading of this narrator and those who brought us the story.

History, humanity, cruelty and hope
Would you consider the audio edition of The Nazi Officer's Wife to be better than the print version?
I listened to this book mesmerized by Edith's story and having to tell myself that this wasn't fiction. Her strength of character through unbelievable hardships shines through. life under Nazi Germany came alive in this book. The cruelty of mankind towards people who are different was evident throughout. A must listen to book. Narrator was excellent. Totally believable, inspirational and not over-dramatic. This story will stay with me.

Wise woman
Great read! Very smart and creative. She was a very strong woman. You do what you have to do in a situation that she was in. I hated to put it down could not wait to pick it up again. Wonderfully spoken by the narrator. A must have.

Hard to believe it wasn't the reader's real story!
What does Barbara Rosenblat bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I kept having to remind myself that she wasn't The Nazi Officer's Wife, but only the reader.
Any additional comments?
Not a typical Holocaust story, but another true hero in my eyes.

This is a beautiful story that must be told.
I found this book years ago and wanted to read it but never did. I am so glad that I found it again and finally know the story. My memory is terrible but I just happened to recall the name as I searched for a good book this morning. I haven't been able to put this down all day and don't regret a second of it.
