Resumen del Editor

When Jill's husband discovers he can never have children, it tears a hole in their marriage that Jill doesn't know how to repair. Frustrated, she seeks comfort in her friends: fierce Leigh, with her high-powered career and doting family, and sweet, uncomplicated Wendy, who has a rock-solid marriage any woman would envy.

Leigh and Wendy's lives seem perfect. But beneath the surface are secrets that could tear their friendship apart.

Leigh has grown tired of her stay-at-home husband and is looking for excitement - outside of the marriage bed. And after seventeen years of marriage, Wendy can't shake the sense that there is something missing in her life.

As Jill is drawn deeper into her friends' relationships, she is confronted by a temptation of her own: an intriguing stranger whose good looks and charm spark an instant connection.

Full of the realities of modern-day marriage, The Secrets of Married Women asks the question: how well can we ever know our husbands, our friends, or even ourselves?

An engrossing read

An engrossing read which walks one through the pitfalls and repercussions of infidelity and it’s impact.
The ending was a little pat but also a surprise.
Worth the time invested.

Hmmm

I'm not sure that I really think this is title properly. But I absolutely enjoyed listening to the story. it was an emotional roller coaster of a few married women.

Essential

Didn't think I could get thru this with the heavy British accent, but as I grew accustomed, and the story unfolded, it was essential to the plot. 3 girlfriends and their own stories and secrets, get together Ike great friends do..... until one of them is excluded from conversations. Guilt abounds as the lives of these three are twisted . Their home lives are average with some kids and some lazy husbands ... until truth starts spilling out and effecting all 3 couples lives... not exactly HEA here.. but a story that needs to be heard!! The author pulls you into these ladies lives as if they are your own.. and if you can't identify with any of them ... your lying to yourself.. be brave and follow this story to the end!

I wanted to like this book...

But, in a word, did not. First, the reader - she has a very strong accent, and all her character share the same. It is very tricky telling one from another. Then, the book itself. I’d listened to another of Carol Mason’s books, and quite liked it, so I figured this one was a sure thing. Not true. Each of the three protagonists are unlikeable for different reasons. Eventually, the dislike grew to the point that it became work to listen...and I stopped.

wonderful story and narration

Overall I enjoyed the narration as well as the story.
the narrator expresses great emotion & passion. I didn't want the story to end. it absolutely makes a difference when the experience of the reader matches complexity of the script.

Pleasantly surprised

Initially, the narrator’s accent was not easy to listen to…hard to identify as Irish, Scottish or British, I found it a bit distracting. As the story progressed, it unfolded into a beautiful tale. I’m normally a fan of thrillers/crime/detective series’…and this one left me listening until well after my run (allotted time set aside to enjoy :)

I felt Way more than I expected to..

I'm a book worm. 3-5 books a week is my habit. I was drawn in and Captivated by this story, and more importantly, the characters. I cried. Hard. That's not easy to invoke, create, or induce. Wow. Thank you so much for the ride.. Wow...

Irritated

The reader for this book was terrible. Sounds like the worst fake Irish accent I have ever herd.

Author describes rape, calls it "bad sex"

Would you listen to The Secrets of Married Women again? Why?

No. the conservative "she asked for it" take on rape is a dangerous narrative. It was entertaining and the characters were well developed, but not a read twice book.

What does Sarah Coomes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She has a lovely voice for the main character, Jill, and varies her voice well for the other female characters however, her male voices are not believable at all. The Russian is really off putting.

Any additional comments?

I left the book very troubled by the encounter with the Russian. What the author described was a consensual encounter, until the moment when Jill sees his penis and says "no, stop" at that point what ensued was rape. Her running from the scene, leaving her purse behind, going into such a depression that she loses her job, all indicate rape. When her husband asks her if it was rape and she says no, because she is confused (this confusion is a normal reaction to a traumatic experience) and he sums it up as "so it was just bad sex" is where the author leaves it. That sends a very dangerous message. This was not just bad sex. This was rape. That the Russian leaves town, also indicates that he knew it was unwanted. This story line is enforcing a conservative, anti feminist bias - saying that she deserved it. No woman deserves rape and she is entitled to say NO at any point in the encounter.
