Historia
If it weren’t for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone. Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time.

As President Clinton's senior adviser, George Stephanopoulos saw it all: the endless arguments, the back-hall scheming, the protracted decisions, and the last minute flip-flops that somehow produced real accomplishments but also set in motion an almost tragic series of events that placed the fate of the president in the hands of the Senate. Now, with the natural ease of a born storyteller and the sensitive eye for detail of a novelist, Stephanopoulos tells his extraordinarily gripping story.

The most toxic racial arguments share one of five traits. They try to erase Black history, prioritize white victimhood, deny Black oppression, promote myths of Black inferiority, or rebrand racism as something else entirely. They’re all designed to distract society from racial justice, but now we have the tools to debunk them.

The mob that stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, represented an extreme form of the central danger facing American democracy today: a blatant disregard for the will of the majority. Through voter suppression, election subversion, gerrymandering, dark money, the takeover of the courts, and the whitewashing of history, reactionary white conservatives have strategically entrenched power in the face of a massive demographic and political shift.

Small acts of courage matter. Sometimes, they change the world. Our history books are filled with the stories of those who fought for democracy and freedom—for idealism itself—against all odds, from Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela to Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. These iconic struggles for social change illustrate the importance of engagement and activism, and offer a template for the battles we are fighting today. But using the right words is often easier than taking action; action can be hard, and costly.

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 dawned what Francis Fukuyama called “The End of History.” Three decades later, Jim Sciutto said on CNN’s air as the Ukraine war began, that we are living in a “1939 moment.” History never ended—it barely paused—and the global order as we have known it is now gone. Great powers are reinvigorated and determined to assert dominance on the world stage. And as it escalates, this new order will affect everyone across the globe.

The relatively new judicial philosophy of textualism dominates the Supreme Court. Textualists claim that the right way to interpret the Constitution and statutes is to read the text carefully and examine the language as it was understood at the time the documents were written. This, however, is not Justice Breyer’s philosophy nor has it been the traditional way to interpret the Constitution since the time of Chief Justice John Marshall. Justice Breyer recalls Marshall’s exhortation that the Constitution must be a workable set of principles to be interpreted by subsequent generations.

Resumen del Editor
George Stephanopoulos, the legendary political news host and former advisor to President Clinton, recounts the history-making crises from the place where twelve presidents made their highest-pressure decisions: the White House Situation Room.
No room better defines American power and its role in the world than the White House Situation Room. And yet, none is more shrouded in secrecy and mystery. Created under President Kennedy, the Sit Room has been the epicenter of crisis management for presidents for more than six decades. Time and again, the decisions made within the Sit Room complex affect the lives of every person on this planet. Detailing close calls made and disasters narrowly averted, THE SITUATION ROOM will take listeners through dramatic turning points in a dozen presidential administrations, including:
- Incredible minute-by-minute transcripts from the Sit Room after both Presidents Kennedy and Reagan were shot.
- The shocking moment when Henry Kissinger raised the military alert level to DEFCON III while President Nixon was drunk in the White House residence.
- The extraordinary scene when President Carter asked for help from secret government psychics to rescue American hostages in Iran.
- A vivid retelling of the harrowing hours during the 9/11 attack.
- New details from Obama administration officials leading up to the raid on Osama Bin Laden.
- And a first-ever account of January 6th from the staff inside the Sit Room.
THE SITUATION ROOM is the definitive, past-the-security-clearance look at the room where it happened, and the people—the famous and those you've never heard of—who have made history within its walls.
Includes a conversation between the author and bestselling novelist Harlan Coben on George’s research for and writing of The Situation Room as well as their long friendship (Track 17), a PDF of photos, and much more.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.
Reseñas de la Crítica
“George Stephanopoulos’s amazing book tells the truth. It puts us in the White House situation room with presidents from JFK to Biden. We are there when JFK creates the room after the Bay of Pigs, we are there during the 9/11 strikes, we are there during the chaotic moments after President Reagan is shot, and when President Obama orders the takedown of Osama bin Laden. This book provides answers to questions we’ve had for years.”—James Patterson
“I know the gold standard of journalism when I see it, and George Stephanopoulos is it. This new book, The Situation Room, is simply mesmerizing. It delivers on the dream we all have of going behind the scenes to learn what was being said and done during some of the most dramatic moments in history. You don’t want to miss this book. I know I can’t put it down.”—Patricia Cornwell

In weeks after the September 11 attacks, 18-year-old Mansoor Adayfi was kidnapped by Afghan militia and sold to US forces for bounty money. After months of interrogations, he was sent to the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, as one of its first prisoners. Like the nearly 800 other men imprisoned at Guantanamo, Adayfi didn’t know why he was imprisoned or for how long. He had never seen a skyscraper and couldn’t imagine what the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center looked like, much less how they were destroyed.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. The history of the tablets translated in the following book is strange and beyond the belief of modern scientists. Their antiquity is stupendous, dating back some 36,000 years. The writer is Thoth, an Atlantean Priest-King, who founded a colony in ancient Egypt after the sinking of the mother country. He was the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, erroneously attributed to Cheops. In it he incorporated his knowledge of the ancient wisdom and also securely secreted records and instruments of ancient Atlantis.

The Communist Party came to power in China and the defeated Nationalist leader, Chiang Kai-shek, fled to Taiwan, where he was afforded US protection. The specter of conflict has loomed ever since.

Derek Black was raised to take over the White nationalist movement in the United States. Derek’s father, Don Black, was a former Grand Wizard in the Ku Klux Klan and started Stormfront, the internet’s first White supremacist website—Derek built the kids’ page—and David Duke was a mentor. Racist hatred, though often wrapped up in respectability and American history, was all Derek knew. It was their inheritance, their community, their identity. Then, while in college in 2013, Derek publicly renounced White nationalism and apologized for their actions and the suffering that they had caused.

A must read for all no matter your politics
Never have I ever written a review of book I have listened to, not because I didn't like them but because I didn't feel moved to take the time. I can no longer say, "never have I ever.." in that regard. This was one of the most informative, apolitical books I have read, there is so much that goes on behind the scenes that we never hear about and would be so helpful when making voting decisions particularly for second term presidents. The humanizing of the people who work in situation room that was illuminated was just so compelling. The research that was done, the primary sources that were identified and utilized lets you know that this is not the authors interpretation of situations but is truly a documented record and when George did have to interpret something is was very quick to point out that it was indeed his interpretation. The use of actual recordings from interviews was so compelling, I found myself tearing up a few times listening to some of the accountings.
Normally I don't enjoy books that are narrated by the author but I think it was important here so that the listener knows this isn't a "story" but an historical accounting. I cannot recommend this book enough, Bravo and thank you George Stephanopoulos for writing this.

Wonderful Book
I am old enough to remember that government employees (DoD for me) are not allowed political opinions. I have been so torn up by January 6th and Trump that it was a huge relief to listen to your book. Thanks for all you do!

Absolutely Engaging
I enjoyed every bit of the book. I have always recommended it to several people. To some it may sound democratically focused, however when you listen to it in its entirety, you do come to realize that there is an overall focus on being balanced, and just delivering the news and opinion of the author. I really appreciate the book and the insight into what’s going on in the situation room. Thank you for your hard work

Great history of American politics
Enjoyed how the book did not get bogged down with any single event. It kept my interest by telling stories from the viewpoint of regular folks. George is a perfect narrator. I like the direct quotes by others too.

Intriguing stories about inside the Situation Room!
Every chapter in The Situation Room transported me back to pivotal historical events with insider details depicting often breathtaking drama and tension surrounding White House decisions. The Situation Room reflections told by staffers who “serve in silence” and Cabinet members illustrate individuals’ dedication to our nation that left me awed and humbled. A wonderful, memorable read.
