Publisher's summary

Ryn has fallen. Ester could be dying. Bonner is too far away to help.

No matter how Declan Idrys looks at his situation, he comes to the same conclusion every time: He is about to die at the hands of the first dark elf seen in 700 years. Fate, fortunately, is not so cruel, though, and after barely surviving this initial encounter with the er’endehn of Eserysh, Declan and his friends find themselves in a tentative truce with the war-loving elves. They share a common enemy, after all, and their mutual hate for the Endless Queen and her growing legions is enough for the two groups to set aside their mistrust for one another, if only for now.

Sehranya, however, is not one to rest easy while her enemies join forces, and Declan and his companions soon find themselves assaulted by new horrors as they set out to make at last for the legendary city of Ysenden in truth.

But the queen has made a mistake. Within Declan the slumbering might of his line is at last stirring, prodded into life by the guiding hands of Bonner yr’Essel. Fire. Power. Strength. Sehranya will rue the day she did not throw everything she had into slaying the one of King’s blood....

Let award-winning voice artist Nick Podehl capture your imagination as you dive into the much-anticipated next installment of The Shattered Reigns, a best-selling fantasy series written by two authors at the top of their game.

Great continuation from the first book!

I loved it and had no problem whatsoever with finishing it. Nick's narration is a perfect fit for all the characters. Best part was Orsek (spelling) jumping around being cheerful

Overall a very good story well written with an excellent performance

It took me a while to get around this book serious but I’m glad I did, I was pleased to discover that while I was able to predict some things I was still taken by surprise On them as I figured it out. Immensely pleased with this Siri so far and as always I cannot express my gratitude to Nick For his excellent performance narrating as usual.

An Excellent Follow Up

It's always nice when a second book lives up to the promise of the first, but it's even better when its even better than the one that came before. When I finished this book I found myself wanting to immediately jump into the next in the series, which I believe is the best compliment I can give a book. It hits all the notes I want out of a sequel. It moved the ongoing series forward while also making sure the book stood on its own as an enjoyable read. You get a lot more context to the world at large in this book and get to see the characters grow in believable ways. I'll say that for the most part I could see where the book was headed, and rarely felt surprised by the reveals, but I still enjoyed the journey. It truly felt like the reveals were (for the most part) meant to be foreshadowed and that they made sense given the breadcrumbs that had been left. One weakness from the first book was the villain/big bad that was being set up didn't feel overly threatening or maybe a little generic, and that the main antagonist of book 1 lacked something because of it. Book 2 does an excellent job of fixing that. Not only do we get to spend more time with the antagonists in this book, but this book goes a long way in establishing just how much of a threat they can be when they want to. Unfortunately there is no book 3 yet, but I look forward to the day it comes.

Nick Podehl is as always a top tier narrator that I'm always happy to listen to, and whose name on the thumbnail makes it far more likely that I take an interest in a new series.

one gripe

my one issue with the series so far is the slow pace. it feels like these two books could have just been one.. beyond that.. i have really enjoyed it so far.
