Publisher's summary
Many of us struggle with stress, overwork, anxiety, exhaustion, and other negative experiences from time to time, sometimes in the wake of unpleasant events, but often simply due to the pace and expectations of 21st-century life. While feeling overwhelmed or drained is a common human experience, when do these feelings become something more than a temporary state of being and start drastically impacting your life? How do you know when you have reached the tipping point into burnout? And once you have crossed that threshold, how do you find peace and equilibrium again?
This is what you will explore in the 10 lessons of Avoiding Burnout. With your presenters, Serena Wadhwa and Lisa Page, you will examine the nature of burnout, from symptoms that trigger it to personal factors that contribute to burnout, such as personality and unhealthy coping strategies. You are also invited to answer questions that will help you assess your own level of coping in different areas that can help you get through challenging situations. You will learn the crucial steps that allow you to catch yourself from falling into burnout, build greater resilience, and manage life’s everyday stressors.
As you progress toward the final destination of these lessons - a healthy, balanced life - you will also focus on behaviors such as setting boundaries, managing negative thinking, and learning assertiveness - all invaluable skills that you can develop to keep yourself going during tough times. As you will discover, no matter how overwhelming it may feel, burnout is manageable, and it is preventable. With the proper skills you can come out of a state of burnout even stronger than you were before you entered it and learn how to avoid it in the future.

When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They'll date each other and break up. There is no bigger public health story now than the collapse in youth mental health. The numbers are terrifying and dominate our headlines. There has been much debate over how we got here, and what to do next, and bestselling author and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt is at the white-hot center of that discourse. Haidt has spent his career speaking wisdom and truth into the most difficult landscapes—communities polarized by politics and religion, campuses battling culture wars, and now the perfect storm contributing to a public health emergency for Gen Z.

While many people attribute procrastination to laziness or a lack of drive, our real motivations to push back and delay important activities and decisions are more complicated than personal weakness. The truth is that humans are well-adapted for basic survival, but they are not so great at managing the stresses and expectations of modern life without a little help.

The proliferation of social media platforms and our increasing reliance on the internet for connection and communication has caused the line between the “real” world and the online world to blur. So much of our lives can be impacted by online interactions—and not all those interactions are positive. Why does the internet seem to encourage bad behavior from some users? Why do we feel we need to share so much of our private lives with the online world? Is screen time really as addictive as the headlines say?

Story
The United States faces significant dangers and opportunities in the coming century. Malicious actors have harnessed new technologies such as drones, missiles, and offensive cyber weapons to threaten and, in some cases, attack America and its allies. Jihadist terrorist organizations are pursuing more destructive capabilities and are growing in strength as the United States disengages from protracted counterterrorism operations abroad.

Interacting with people at work can be one of life’s greatest joys—and greatest frustrations. Some coworkers never trust us to do our jobs, or never respond to requests for information, or waste our time with dozens of unnecessary emails. The cost: our work results and personal sanity. How can you approach workplace interactions with more empathy and less resentment? How can you become more successful when working with “annoying” or “difficult” coworkers?

Story
The 16th century was a time of immense change across the globe. For many historians, it marks a massive shift in the way the world operated; it is often considered the beginning of modernity. We may regard the 16th century as the time of Shakespeare and the conquistadors, but women also played a powerful role in many of the major events around the world. In 10 Women Who Ruled the Renaissance, you will explore the lives of 10 extraordinary women who exemplified the spirit of the 1500s - an era dominated by adventure, discovery, and cross-cultural exchange.

Story
Eating is an indispensable human activity. As a result, whether we realize it or not, the drive to obtain food has been a major catalyst across all of history, from prehistoric times to the present. Epicure Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin said it best: "Gastronomy governs the whole life of man."

We might be afraid of lions, tigers, and bears (oh, my!), but much more frequently, our worst foes come without teeth and claws and in teeny, tiny packages. In These Six Things Will Kill You, medical historian Brandy Schillace introduces you to half a dozen deadly forces, often microscopic and invisible, that might be coming for you at this very moment.

as a burned out student, this is super helpful for helping me figure out how to balance my own stuff. I'm excited to use some of the skills with clients as well.

Helpful framing, pdf needed
This course framed a number of things very helpfully, but in slightly more detail than my burned out brain could track without an accompanying pdf.
Great Courses have provided these before, and it’s hard to imagine an instance where it could be more helpful.

Can Feel Condescending
This lecture series has a lot in common with the other Great Courses series "Do It Now: Overcoming Procrastination". Yet while "Avoiding Burnout" has similar information, it comes with drawbacks not present in "Procrastination". "Burnout" can feel like it's either being condescending (such as telling you to imagine your happy place on the beach when anxious) or being too cold (such as when a few lectures that focus on burnout only in terms of how the brain works, not with examples of real world implications).
I would recommend you listen to the "Procrastination" lectures instead. I'll summarize what you need to know from these lectures: Burnout begins with an average level of stress that blows up when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, unable to meet the demands of everyday living, and/or as though you’re being yanked in too many directions at once. Burnout symptoms are exhaustion, depersonalization, and a lack of fulfillment.
