Entertaining but lore questionable

The story was fun and it was great to hear a Genestealer Cult being smart and using interesting tactics. My biggest quibble is that Mr. Clark took some liberties with established lore, like who the Captain of the 5th Company is in the era the story happens as well as Dorn-descended Space Marines suddenly having the organ required for automatically going into suspended animation following severe but non-lethal injury. Those aside, the story is entertaining if not fantastic.

A good example event in the 40K universe

It’s not deep in terms of story and character development but it is a good example of 40K in terms of it’s full of high stakes, action, and war.

Also a decent novel if you want to read something with Imperial Fists/Genestealer Cults/Deathwatch.

FOR DORN! FOR FATHER, BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!!

THIS was amazing and really shows the Imperial Fists at thir weakest in terms of how they are designed to fight. The fanatical Genstealers outmaneuver the Fortress Breakers at every turn with insurgency tactics they simply are not equipped mentally to deal with. There are so many good characters and incredible duels and battles in this ONE story it's enough for three books. Captain Lyran himself is AN ABSOLETE Champ both on and off the battlefield and his unique POV and humane leadership is the only thing that saves the Imperial Forces from themselves. And his Partner powers are IMPRESSIVE to say the least, but not overpowered.
Nevertheless the Fists are fortress Breakers and the Genstealers have no central redoubt to break. they set the terms of every engagement, striking from unexpected directions, undermining Imperial moral, using well planned sabotage tactics and generally being a complete utter bunch of badasses that I was rooting for! The speeches on both sides are VERY WELL written and equally intense. Then you have the Governor and Deathwatch OH BOI do they add a whole element of incredible characters.

A little less space marine death please

Is it just me or does war hammer seemed to be trying to kill off all the old space Marines. By the end of the book I was How many the space Marines that weren't main characters were still alive. It was like every 5 minutes another space marine was dying. It was really hard to listen to

Don’t let the bad reviews discourage you. This is a great book

I saw a few negative reviews about this book, specifically one on audible and it caused me to hesitate in listening to this story despite the description really interesting me. I eventually listened to it and immediately regretted not doing so sooner. This is a really great story that had a good mix of Imperial Fists, genestealer cult, politics and more. I highly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in 40k.

Marines as they should be.

Of the around 150 books I read/heard this is maybe the best yet (besides Eisenhorn). Also my first review which tells you a lot. This story delivers on my vision of what Adeptus Astartes are supposed to be. Superhuman in body, training and will but still human in terms of emotions and flaws. Foremost among them their knowledge of what they are and the overconfidence that comes with it. Perfectly illustrated in this story here against a seemingly inferior foe. Don’t forget that Space Marines are mostly adolescents that were transformed and conditioned into warriors, emotional maturity often lacking.

Some parts made me laugh out loud in a good way

Yellow proud sons of Dorn in an element that is not their “element.” May your penance in the pain gauntlet grant you the clarity u need to prevail. In the Emperors name.
