"You don't know God." The church elder’s eyes locked on me from across the conference table. “He’s absent from your narrative.” The room went woozy, and I struggled to bring my brain back online, managing to sputter, “God is the center of my narrative!” But he wasn’t listening. He already had his story about me. Here’s mine.

I grew up in the Southern Baptist church of the '90s during the height of the True Love Waits movement, accompanied by Joshua Harris’ best seller, I Kissed Dating Goodbye. If you don’t know what I am referring to, consider yourself blessed. Many of the ideas perpetuated by this culture were infused with fear and shame, offering no practical help or guidance in equipping young people to become healthy sexual human beings.

I am a recovering ass. Of course, at times I still am one, but it's less often. I now recognize my “assness” more quickly, recalibrate, and take action to make amends for my poor behavior. It's important to acknowledge the truth of our mistakes without turning toward self-contempt, shame, or beating ourselves up for the harm we have caused to those we love. Yet, we must take full responsibility for our poor behavior and fully own what we have done and learn to live differently, becoming men who bring life rather than further heartache.

There must be a better way to outgrow our unhealthy dependence on pornography. Religious communities often fall short engaging pornography in a meaningful way, quality resources are scarce. We must strip away the sexuality of our porn use, face the complexity of our own sexual development and stories head-on. We must get beneath to what is driving our hunger to use women as objects of our pleasure, and learn how to honor not objectify.

Story
I have always felt compelled not to allow women’s research to be further behind, as we live in a patriarchal society. For the Christian female, we are even further behind with well-articulated research on Christian women’s sexual health, because we are just emerging from decades of purity culture in the Western, White, patriarchal church systems. We need all women’s voices to bring their stories to the table, so here is mine. As a Christian, psychotherapist, and PhD in women's sexual and spiritual health, these are the stories I have listened to for the past 15 years.

Tiffany Yecke Brooks shows—through stories from her own life, conversations with Christians from a variety of backgrounds, historical anecdotes, and messy episodes from Scripture—that there can be faith after disillusionment.

What if the goal of raising a Christian girl was about more than keeping her virginity intact? What if it was about raising a strong, independent young woman who knows who she is, uses her voice, and confidently steps into the life God has for her? From the authors of The Great Sex Rescue comes this evidence-based book grounded on surveys of over 28,000 women to offer moms a fresh, freeing, and biblically grounded message of sexuality and self-worth for their daughters that is less about the don'ts and more about the dos.

We desire to be transformed, to grow more and more like Christ. But for many of us, our strategies for change don’t work. We misperceive God as a judgmental Father, leaving us demoralized and paralyzed by shame. Stumbling Toward Wholeness offers a new strategy for spiritual growth and life transformation: regularly returning to the arms of a kind and loving Father.

Publisher's summary
A daring invitation to discover and claim your identity and purpose, and to embrace the freedom to thrive right where you are
Every woman wants wholeness—to be at home in her body, in her relationships, in her life. But women too often feel that they don’t belong to themselves. The path to wholeness, to a woman belonging to herself, is formidable, and women know they can’t travel it alone.
Author, teacher, and therapist Dr. Christy Angelle Bauman has dedicated her life to guiding women on this path to meaning and profound joy.
In Her Rites, Dr. Bauman takes you into her office and through six transformative exercises: a deep dive into the most common rites of passage in every woman’s life, when she sometimes loses hold of herself but also has a unique opportunity to reclaim herself.
• Birth: claiming how and why you came into the world
• Initiation: coming of age
• Exile: finding yourself
• Creation: bringing something new into the world
• Intuition: acquiring embodied wisdom that comes later in life
• Legacy: living with emotional and spiritual readiness for one’s own death
These rites help women to find wholeness and self-knowledge. Included in Her Rites are ritual templates and exercises that Dr. Bauman employs with her clients, which will help any woman incorporate the principles of self-reclamation into her daily life.
Dr. Bauman has seen again and again that by learning to pause and to reflect on these key moments, we can come home to ourselves and receive the gift of flourishing.
*Includes a downloadable PDF containing a workbook of marking guides that corresponds to each rite of passage mentioned throughout the book.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.
Critic reviews
“Christy Angelle Bauman offers a wise, gentle, and compelling vision of what needs to be consecrated in a woman’s life—the deaths and the births of hope.”—Dan B. Allender, PhD, founding president of the Seattle School of Theology and Psychology
“Don’t just read Her Rites; expect to experience it, to wrestle with it, to sit and be still with all the God moments it brings. I emerged from Her Rites lighter, more confident, and better able to listen to my body. I am grateful.”—Sheila Wray Gregoire, author of The Great Sex Rescue
“This book is a stunning invitation to take your life seriously, as well as a helpful resource for doing just that.”—Scott Erickson, author of Honest Advent

Story
If it is true that God is a male, then his divinity or deity is expressed in his masculinity. Yet, I am a woman, and there are parts of my body, such as my breasts, vagina, and womb that are telling a story about God that I have never learned or understood. This is an exploration of the significance of a womb that must shed and bleed before it can create. How will we engage our body which cyclically bleeds most of our life and can build and birth a human soul? How will we honor the living womb that lives and, sometimes, dies within us?

The pain that happened to you is real . . . and it matters immensely. The notion of healing what you can’t erase is not about ignoring the devastation of your past or putting a glossy, positive spin on current tragedy. That plastic version of faith isn’t actually faith; it’s unbelief. Healing What You Can’t Erase offers a far better solution—a road map for moving forward through the losses and scars by allowing the power of the Holy Spirit to transform us . . . spirit, soul, and body.

Highly recommended to ALL women
I'm recommending this book to all the women in my life. It is incredibly insightful and has helped me tremendously to look back on my life and then to journey forward. I was stuck in so many places and didn't realize it. What Christy has created is a path forward for all of us, because if we are all honest, we are all stuck somewhere. I loved the audio format even more than the written format, because Christy shares it with such passion and grace. It's like she's sitting in the room with you just sharing her heart. I can't recommend this book enough!
