Publisher's summary

A book for people who want to save the West but don’t know how. The fate of our civilization depends on whether ordinary people internalize the truth and beauty conveyed in the masterpieces of Western culture. Spencer Klavan, classicist and podcaster, defends that culture and explains why and how we must hand it on to the next generation.

It has been proclaimed many times, but perhaps never more convincingly than now, when every news cycle seems to deliver further confirmation of a world gone mad.

Is this the endgame? Have we come to closing time in the West?

Author Spencer Klavan is a classicist, with a Ph.D. from Oxford, and a deep understanding of the West. His analysis: The situation is dire. But every crisis we face today, we have faced before. And we can surmount each one. Today’s “five essential crises” are:

• The Crisis of Reality: Is there such a thing as objective truth—and even if there is, can “virtual reality” replace it?

• The Crisis of the Body: Not just the “transgender” insanity, but the push for a “transhumanist” future

• The Crisis of Meaning: Evolution—both biological and cultural—is a process of endless replication, of copying. But is there an original model that gives us an aspiration to aim for? Do our lives and actions have meaning?

• The Crisis of Religion: Science has not eliminated man's religious impulse, but rather misdirected it—and wrongly dismissed the profound philosophical plausibility of Judeo-Christian revelation.

• The Crisis of the Regime: Has America reached a point of inevitable collapse? Republican government was meant to end the destructive cycle of regimes rising and falling—but can it?

Klavan brings to the West’s defense the insights of Plato, Aristotle, the Bible, and the Founding Fathers to show that in the wisdom of the past lies hope for the future. That wisdom can improve our own lives and the lives of those around us—and ultimately save the West.

Deep and exactly whats needed

Klavan reaches deep into our mind and beliefs to help us connect with our soul. He explains things in ways that seem correct, but i had just forgotten.

He has pulled together 5 Crisis that our society is definitely speeding towards. Our history tells us we've been here before. In those crisis others learned from reading but may not have paid attention. We must pay attention to those past writings again.

This book does not prove there is a God, but it tells us that what is real is more then just matter and cells. We humans have a soul and this book (along with the great minds from our past) explain how and why that is.

This book may be the only book i have ever finished and immediately turned to the first page and started again....

Amazing work

I love Spencer! Young Heretics is great and this is like an injection of concentrated Klavan into my brain. Thank you for the outlook. Maybe it was my headphones, but the audio was a tiny bit scratchy whenever I unpaused. Not a problem. I hope everyone goes forth to seek the True, the Good, and the Beautiful!

Enlightening.

The author tied all the miscellaneous points in Ancient history together and related them to the present. Thought provoking and accessible.

Great

I was interested in this book from the moment I heard the author describe it. The use of multiple sources of history, science, philosophy, and literature make it a great reading list as well as a great book.

Thoroughly enjoyed.

Loved this book. I have recently just started studying Philosophy. Your book summarized the importance of knowing and understanding our western history and drawing on this knowledge can actually be a solution. Because, thier really is nothing new under the sun.

Outstanding!!! Highly recommend!!!

A classical understanding of today's issues and problems, presented in a way that allows the reader to have to think and decide for themselves how to navigate through these complex issues of our day. He presents the issues in a clear and concise manner, then offers the context and information around the issues. Refreshing to read.

Incredible depth with approachable clarity

Wow, I expected to enjoy this book but it truly blew me away. I loved how Klavan takes the wisdom of the ancients and applies it to our current circumstances. Profoundly deep without being overwhelming. Thought-provoking and inspiring all at once.

Brilliant, Entertaining, and Necessary Read

Klavan takes the time to explain the importance of the history of the West in a compelling way. The "old thinkers" are made relevant and palatable for the 21st century reader. Whether you're a history buff or not, this book meets the reader where you're at and gives you the tools to understand what's at stake today. More importantly, it gently guides you to ask the big questions of yourself and what you believe. Great book. Worth it.
