I love this book..
I put it on 0.8 and have downloaded the accompanying PDF to understand the tones and letters.
The Brain works by understanding the context of words and phrases and Paul has done an exceptional job here by leveraging that insight. Don't think twice if you're serious about Mandarin.

If you're just starting your journey into learning Mandarin Chinese, start here. Paul Noble lays a solid foundation to build off of. I have studied Chinese in the past, but this series made me feel much more confident with both speaking and listening and I wish it had existed 15 years ago when I first tried to learn Chinese.

What's great about this method?

1) Plenty of time to think through your answers (unlike most "book on tape" methods).
2) Clear, non-confusing grammar explanations that introduce some of the main grammar differences between English and Chinese that you will need to know.
3) Permission to "forget" along the way - trust me, this really is helpful.
4) Getting to hear 2 different native speakers, which helps with listening comprehension.
5) Regular review of previous material throughout the method
6) A faster paced review section at the end so that you don't forget what you've learned.

Warning, this course may feel slow at first, but by the end you'll be amazed at how much you've learned!

Start here and with "Next Steps in Mandarin Chinese" to get a great foundation, then use other resources (like Pimsleur, Duolingo, Hello Chinese, and so many other resources out there) to help build on that foundation afterwards. I can't recommend this method enough!

Amazing for Beginners

I have already been studying Chinese for almost a year so most of this was review. But, it was an amazing review. This was hands-down the best explanation of Chinese tones and grammar and the repetition is just enough to be effective without getting boring.

I also have Paul Noble's Spanish and Japanese which are great as well. 👍🏿

Better than I could have ever guessed!

Phenomenal resource for taking on the overwhelming task of learning another language! A brilliant beginning to introduce the familiarities between English and Mandarin! I covered this resource 5 chapters at a time until I was comfortable (probably 2-3 set’s depending on difficulty) and then moved onto the next set of 5 chapters, in a year of casual practice I had a really great understanding and completed the main course within the book! I’ll be listening through again!

Very logical and Easy Way of Learning Mandarin

I am 5 hours into this course over a 2 week period. I have made good progress. Paul Noble's method is simple and modular. I look forward to getting into the course every morning. He mentions that you can forget what is being taught. One of the tricks I am using is, every morning and evening, I rewind about 15-30 mins of the material that I have gone through. It helps me with getting a firm grasp on that material as I move forward. I spent about 1.25 hour morning and evening . I augment this material with google translate as it shows me the tonal spelling. Try not to miss multiple days(I did and regretted it), a single day puts you behind a lot. Overall very impressed with this. I have bought the next book and will jump into that as soon as this is done.
