Poi, a distanza di tempo, l'avvocato riappare sull'espresso delle quattro e un quarto (da cui il titolo dell'opera) e, come se niente fosse, intrattiene il protagonista del libro con una interminabile chiacchierata. Ma nulla quadra.
Amelia Ann Edwards (1831-1892), nata a Londra, fu scrittrice, giornalista e persino egittologa di chiara fama. Da bambina mostrò subito un certo talento letterario, componendo la sua prima poesia all'età di sette anni.
Cominciò a pubblicare articoli, storie e poesie su numerose riviste, in particolare su due settimanali creati e diretti da Charles Dickens, suo amico personale.
La Edwards si occupava di norma delle ghost stories da inserire nei numeri natalizi. Narratrice prolifica pubblicò anche numerosi romanzi di successo, in particolare Barbara's History (1864) che ne consolidò la fama.
