Publisher's summary

London, 1892 - Cyrus Barker is brought into a game of international espionage by the Prime Minister himself in the newest mystery in Will Thomas's beloved series.

Private enquiry agents Cyrus Barker and Thomas Llewelyn receive in the mail an unexplained key stamped with the letter Q. Barker, recognizing it for what it is, uses the key to unlock an anonymous door in the alleyway, which opens to an underground tunnel leading to Downing Street.

The Prime Minister has a small task for Cyrus Barker. A Foreign Office agent stole a satchel in Eastern Europe, but was then himself murdered at Charing Cross. The satchel contains a document desperately wanted by the German government, but while the agent was killed, the satchel remains in English hands. With a cold war brewing between England and Germany, it's in England's interest to return the document contained in the satchel to its original owners and keep it out of German hands.

The document is an unnamed first century gospel; the original owner is the Vatican. And the German government isn't the only group trying to get possession of it. With secret societies, government assassins, political groups, and shadowy figures of all sorts doing everything they can - attacks, murders, counter-attacks, and even massive street battles - to acquire the satchel and its contents, this small task might be beyond even the prodigious talents of Cyrus Barker.

Love this series

A fun romp with Barker and Llewellyn. I enjoy listening to their exploits and the addition of Thomas’s wife is very fun.

perfectionI

Narrator perfect, storyline and character development also perfect. Historical info mingles well with the fiction.

Marital Discourse

don't knead the "wife's" showdown. drearily dulled the panache ‼ decidedly against future secondary performance

Thomas Llewelyn is coming along nicely

Eleven books into the series & I’m still enjoying Will Thomas’ Barker & Llewelyn novels. It’s 1892, Cyrus Barker has made Thomas Llewelyn a partner in the Inquiry Agency Barker opened more than 10 years ago. Thomas has been married to his wife for 6 months when the novel begins. The Prime Minister contacts them about being couriers to a satchel that a spy from the Home Office stole from Eastern Europe & was killed at Charing Cross. The British government wants to return it to its original owners & away from German hands.

I do love this series & am seeing a lot of growth in Thomas Llewelyn. You see the return of many familiar characters in this story. The story pace was perfect, but almost too fast.

a Sherlock like series

not as stuffy as Sherlock. historicaly correct. readers have gone to great effort to get the accents correct. while they flow better as a series each is also satisfying as a single volume. very enjoyable read.

A good book, mostly.

Well and complete without the irritating addition to the domestic arrangements of the wife. I love strong women, but this one...is not. More interfering. However, I would like very much to continue this series. The effort made to shoehorn her in was to the detriment of the entirety.

I came quite close to choosing 3 stars for the story instead of 4. If the narration and writing for the majority wasn't so good, if the camaraderie between the gents wasn't so enjoyable, I would have. Really, please tone down the ridiculous insertions of Rebecca, please. I mean, it was far more believable that her neck would be slit than how the scene played out. Suspension of disbelief is all fine and good when the scene teeters on a 50-50 edge, but not when it is 80-20 or worse.

I'm in a way making a hash of this review. I did enjoy nearly all of the book and would rec the whole series with enthusiasm, even with the rankling bits.

Better and better

Usually by this time books in series begin to get stale, but not so with Barker and Llewellyn. They keep getting better with each new book.
