NO ONCE DOES WESTERNS LIKE LOUIS LAMOUR
- By Gary on 12-05-11
By: Louis L'Amour
Publisher's summary
Edge-of-your-seat thrillers from the greatest Western author ever.
There will never be another Western writer like Louis L’Amour. A legendary author and indisputably the greatest storyteller in his genre of all time, L’Amour captivated millions of readers and has sold well over three hundred million copies of his works, which includes nearly ninety novels and countless short stories.
Mistakes Can Kill You highlights an essential selection featuring nine of L’Amour’s earlier short stories, sometimes written under the pen name Jim Mayo, that exemplify the rugged morality of the best Western writing. In “Black Rock Coffin-Makers”, two men ready to kill over ownership of a ranch get more than they bargain for when a stranger is caught in the crossfire. And in “Four- Card Draw”, Allen Ring wins a ranch in a poker game, only to find out an unsolved murder was committed there years ago and law enforcement thinks Ring knows more about it than he’s letting on.
L’Amour made his characters come alive on the page, and his ability to capture the spirit and authenticity of the Wild West is unrivaled. Mistakes Can Kill You transports you to a world you’ll never want to leave, and proves that Louis L’Amour will always be the king of spinning a classic Western yarn.

Busted out of prison by an outlaw friend, Flintlock joins a hunt for a fortune - a golden bell hanging in a remote monastery. But between the smouldering ruin of his former jail cell and a treasure in the Arizona mountains there will be blood at a U.S. Army fort, a horrifying brush with Apache warriors, and a dozen bloody showdowns with the schemers, shootists, madmen, and lost women who find their way to Flintlock's side.

Louis L'Amour is now one of the most iconic Western writers of all time, but once upon a time he was Jim Mayo, a regular writer for the pulps. Some of the tales he wrote in those days stuck with him enough that he later revised and expanded them into novels. But there was a special magic to the originals, and after research and restoration, these stories appear here now in their original form.

Story
Ross Hardy had made his decision. He sat in the middle of all he owned, a splendid Appaloosa gelding, a fine California saddle, a .44 Winchester rifle, and two walnut-stocked Colt .44 pistols. These were his all. It was a life that had left him rich in experience, but poor in goods of the world. The experience was the hard-fisted experience of cold winters, dry ranges, and the dusty bitterness of cattle drives.

Great short stories
This audio is a series of short stories and each one great in its own right. Narrative is good but the narration of the ladies part was a little on the corny side - being a guy the narrator did pretty good at winging it. Great stories and a worthwhile listen. Five by five on stories with a par four on ladies parts, overall I recommend stepping back into the sage brush and stewing a pot of coffee to settle in on a great adventure.

ANOTHER NUGGET! !
What can one say about Louis L'Amour that hasn't been said countless times before? He is a story teller/writer for the ages. All of the stories I have read by him are tightly constructed, fast moving, organic tales that he weaves into superb reading. I read everything I find by Mr. L'Amour and have yet to be disappointed. After read each I feel as though I have just spent time with an old friend.
He is and will be sorely missed.

Good mix of stories, average delivery
Overall, there was not a single story I found truly disappointing. The varying lengths and the fact that some had chapters to them while others were brief kept me on my toes. However I believe it could have been narrated better, although the delivery had ample variations character to character, I found it hard to imagine these gruff outlaws and quick-to-draw cowboys never had a deeper tonality in their voices. It distracted from the protagonists plights at times. However I would recommend to friends and family as the stories can be quite enthralling at times.
