Publisher's summary

From the world's reigning expert on expertise comes a powerful new approach to mastering almost any skill.

Have you ever wanted to learn a language or pick up an instrument, only to become too daunted by the task at hand? Expert performance guru Anders Ericsson has made a career of studying chess champions, violin virtuosos, star athletes, and memory mavens. Peak condenses three decades of original research to introduce an incredibly powerful approach to learning that is fundamentally different from the way people traditionally think about acquiring a skill.

Ericsson's findings have been lauded and debated but never properly explained. So the idea of expertise still intimidates us - we believe we need innate talent to excel or think excelling seems prohibitively difficult.

Peak belies both of these notions, proving that almost all of us have the seeds of excellence within us - it's just a question of nurturing them by reducing expertise to a discrete series of attainable practices. Peak offers invaluable, often counterintuitive advice on setting goals, getting feedback, identifying patterns, and motivating yourself. Whether you want to stand out at work or help your kid achieve academic goals, Ericsson's revolutionary methods will show you how to master nearly anything.

Eye opening

One of the most inspirational books I've read. It is truly earthshattering to learn that one, natural talent is a myth, and two, that high performers are products almost entirely of deliberate practice.

Outstanding book - practice not talent

I frequently tell others that “there is no such thing as luck.”

I frequently tell others that “people do not pay you for what you know, they pay you for what you do.”

This book gives example after example in excellent detail why both my statements are true.

You can learn to do anything you desire and are willing to undertake.

Unlike, my statements which underscore the need for hard work and diligence, this book shows you that it is a particularly kind of hard work, “deliberate practice” and the developement of “effective mental representations” that are really needed for achievement in any field.

This book is the 2nd greatest book I have ever read, just behind the very brief book “As a Man Thinketh” by James Allen.

Great for coaches and parents

This book is a must for any coach, parent or teacher. I’ve listened to 2 others that were similar. Really good information on being good at something. Anyone can be good at anything, it just takes effort.

Life changing read

It is important to ignore the voice of the reader, as he is very good at reading the book as if he were speaking the material: not simply reading it. Thus, this was one of my most engaging non-fiction listenings of an audible text!

Peak is truly groundbreaking and a must-read!

Great book. Extremely informative.

Went into a level of depth other books on the topic barely scratch the surface. Just about any question you might have (that we have answers to) about performance, talent and how to acquire talent, skills and expertise are answered here in this book.

Great book.

I applied the principles of deliberate practice to engage in learning a second language. So far I have experienced mental representations in the form of model sentences that I can practice to develop communication.
