Story
A rich American is murdered in mysterious circumstances in a manor house in Sussex, England. Sherlock Holmes, accompanied by Dr. Watson, is invited to help the investigation. Though Holmes solves the mystery at hand, his attention and indeed the mystery itself shifts to the coalfields of North America. The heart of the matter is corruption - the date is 1875. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle outs his finger with uncanny accuracy on civil corruption which so blighted North America in that century.

One of the most revered works in English literature, Great Expectations traces the coming of age of a young orphan, Pip, from a boy of shallow aspirations into a man of maturity. From the chilling opening confrontation with an escaped convict to the grand but eerily disheveled estate of bitter old Miss Havisham, all is not what it seems in Dickens’ dark tale of false illusions and thwarted desire.

Story
It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

A Must for the Holmes Fan
Derek Jacobi is to the audio Holmes what Jeremy Brett was to the video - absolute perfection! Whether you listen to one or many, these stories are a wonderful respite from the modern world. Holmes is enigmatic, Watson is lovable, and the plots - though indisputably dated - continue to be intriguing and satisfying. If you know the tales well, vaguely, or not at all, "The Memoires" is one of the best collections to choose and this is the very best narrator. It's elementary!

Derek Jacobi is the best Sherlock narrator
Great stories are even greater when an outstanding actor like Derek Jacobi reads them... he interprets the voices and subtext in such a warm an engaging way you can listen to these mysteries over and over again.

Amazing except...
Any additional comments?
Why wouldn't they break this series into tracks as opposed to lumping it all into one giant file??? They have done this with the past stories but with this one its just one, 9 hour long track! BOOOOOOO with this absurd exception, its an awesome recording.

Mr. Jacobi is very disappointing
I have other audiobooks narrated by Mr. Jacobi and have been enthralled. However, in this particular case his voice sounds overworked, strained and hoarse . Therefore it is difficult to listen to the chapters.
