Years ago, after suffering a humiliatingly large dumb tax, it dawned on me that I have a seemingly unlimited ability to hit unforced errors and sabotage my business and financial success. I suspect you do, too. It turns out that the key to getting rich (and staying that way) is to avoid doing stupid things. I don't need to do more smart things. I just need to make fewer dumb mistakes. The vast majority of our dumb tax is a direct result of emotional, overly optimistic, and poorly thought out decisions.

We've all had experiences with two dramatically different types of leaders. The first type drain intelligence, energy, and capability from the people around them and always need to be the smartest people in the room. These are the idea killers, the energy sappers, the diminishers of talent and commitment. On the other side of the spectrum are leaders who use their intelligence to amplify the smarts and capabilities of the people around them.

Publisher's summary
Eventually every job and every business will become irrelevant. According to Jason Jennings, the past few decades have seen unprecedented shifts: former third-world nations have transformed themselves into high-tech manufacturing powerhouses; technology has democratized business and increased competition in ways never before seen; and customers, used to getting exactly what they want when they want it, are no longer beholden to the corporate giants.
Facing these challenges, today’s established companies face two choices: stick with the status quo and become irrelevant or completely revamp their strategy in order to stay vital in the new world order. But how?
Jennings and his research team examined thousands of articles and news stories and selected the 100 best examples of companies - including Best Buy, Cirque du Soleil, and Avon - that have successfully reinvented themselves. After interviewing the key players in these transformations, Jennings established what he calls the “reinvention rules,” including:
- Abandon all ego: In the old days, one’s reputation could last for an entire career. But now being a master of conventional thinking yields conventional results
- Take lots of small chances: When venturing into new realms, one huge risk could potentially break your company, but small bets allow you to see what works - and what doesn’t - without putting your neck on the line.
- Be frugal: Money can solve a lot of problems, but it can’t solve everything. The best companies know how to fix problems and effect change using the resources already available.
- Grow constantly: If you want to nurture and retain your best people, you need to make sure you can give them opportunities that will make them want to stay.
With the same friendly style of Jennings’s previous titles, this audiobook is a must-hear for any leader who wants to stay relevant for years to come.

Big new ideas rarely make great businesses. Laboring on a business plan can be a waste of time. You are going to need dramatically more start-up money than you think you do. Counterintuitive concepts like these have helped the world's best entrepreneurs succeed. Yet most of us only learn them the hard way. Len Green, an experienced investor, entrepreneur, and business professor, shares inside secrets and proven tactics for launching a business.

Imagine what Atari might have achieved if Steve Jobs had stayed there to develop the first massmarket personal computer. Or what Steve Case might have done for PepsiCo if he hadn't left for a gaming start-up that eventually became AOL. What if Salomon Brothers had kept Michael Bloomberg, or Bear Stearns had exploited the inventive ideas of Stephen Ross? "Years ago, I wrote about a retail store in the Palo Alto environs—a good one, which had a box of two-cent candies at the checkout. I subsequently remember that 'little' parting gesture of the two-cent candy as a symbol of all that is Excellent at that store. Dozens of people who have attended seminars of mine have come up to remind me, sometimes 15 or 20 years later, of “the two-cent candy story,” and to tell me how it had a sizable impact on how they did business."

Story
A business parable about how to create a start-up that won't trap you when you want to sell it. According to John Warrillow, the number one mistake entrepreneurs make is to build a business that relies too heavily on them. Thus, when the time comes to sell, buyers aren't confident that the company-even if it's profitable-can stand on its own. To illustrate this, Warrillow introduces us to a fictional small business owner named Alex who is struggling to sell his advertising agency.

He had seen the developing world use coconut water, but this valuable resource was being discarded in the US.
