At the time of the French Revolution, one of Britain's most skillful naval officers, Charles Saunders Hayden, is a young lieutenant, the son of an English father and a French mother. In the opening volume of his acclaimed American Revolution series, Nathaniel Philbrick turns his keen eye to pre-Revolutionary Boston and the spark that ignited the American Revolution. In the aftermath of the Boston Tea Party and the violence at Lexington and Concord, the conflict escalated and skirmishes gave way to outright war in the Battle of Bunker Hill. It was the bloodiest conflict of the revolutionary war, and the point of no return for the rebellious colonists.

Story
Before the ink was dry on the U.S. Constitution, the establishment of a permanent military had become the most divisive issue facing the new government. Would a standing army be the thin end of dictatorship? Would a navy protect American commerce against the Mediterranean pirates, or drain the treasury and provoke hostilities with the great powers? The founders, particularly Jefferson, Madison, and Adams, debated these questions fiercely and switched sides more than once.

At the height of WWII, five idealistic young Americans receive a mysterious letter from the OSS, asking them if they are willing to fight for their country. The men and women from very different backgrounds - a Texan athlete with German roots, an upper-crust son of a French mother and a wealthy businessman, a dirt-poor Midwestern fly fisherman, an orphaned fashion designer, and a ravishingly beautiful female fencer - all answer the call of duty, but each for a secret reason of his or her own. Publisher's summary
The first novel in a brilliant new series by award-winning historian James L. Haley, featuring young midshipman Bliven Putnam as he begins his naval service aboard the USS Enterprise.
It is 1801, and President Thomas Jefferson has assembled a deep-water navy to fight the growing threat of piracy, as American civilians are regularly kidnapped by Islamist brigands and held for ransom, enslaved, or killed, all at their captors' whim. The Berber States of North Africa, especially Tripoli, claimed their faith gave them the right to pillage anyone who did not submit to their religion.
Young Bliven Putnam, great-nephew of Revolutionary War hero Israel Putnam, is bound for the Mediterranean and a desperate battle with the pirate ship Tripoli. He later returns under the legendary Commodore Edward Preble on the Constitution and marches across the Libyan desert with General Eaton to assault Derna - discovering the lessons he learns about war and life are not what he expected.
Rich with historical detail and cracking with high-wire action, The Shores of Tripoli brings this amazing period in American history to life with brilliant clarity.
Critic reviews
“The history is thoroughly researched, the fiction inventive, the style at once easygoing and rapid.... This is a marvelous and richly enjoyable novel, and the intended series to follow promises to do for the American Navy and the Marines what C.S. Forester and Patrick O’Brian did for the Royal Navy.... More, please.” (Wall Street Journal)
“James L. Haley has taken the naval adventure genre to places it has not gone before, filled with strong, believable characters who nearly jump of the page, deeply researched details of life both here and abroad...and a powerful, sweeping view of one of the seminal events in the early history of our country...a rollicking good time.” (Brian Kilmeade, author of Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates)
“It's a rare novelist who has a commanding grasp of history, and it's a rare historian who has an intuitive understanding of how to bring fictional characters to life. Fortunately for us readers of the Shores of Tripoli - and (please!) of the next book about Lieutenant Bliven Putnam - James L. Haley fuses historian and novelist into a spellbinding storytelling whole. There could be no better captain to sail this ship.” (Stephen Harrigan, best-selling author of The Gates of the Alamo and A Friend of Mr. Lincoln)

Story
Charles Lenox, Victorian gentleman and armchair explorer, likes nothing more than to relax in his private study with a cup of tea, a roaring fire and a good book. But when his lifelong friend Lady Jane asks for his help, Lenox cannot resist the chance to unravel a mystery. Prudence Smith, one of Jane's former servants, is dead of an apparent suicide. But Lenox suspects something far more sinister: murder, by a rare and deadly poison.

Story
It was an age of empire, an age of contrast, and an age of dramatic change - and one which would determine the destinies of nations as well as of men. Captain Philip Blackwood of the Royal Marines rejoins his ship, HMS Audacious, in August of 1850, anxious to get back into action. "Per Mare - Per Terram" is the marines' motto. In the torturous heat of Africa, where they are sent to stamp out the remaining strongholds of slavery, and later, in the bitter war of the Crimea, Philip Blackwood and his men learn to obey it without question.

John Paul Jones is more than a great sea story. Jones is a character for the ages. John Adams called him the "most ambitious and intriguing officer in the American Navy." The renewed interest in the Founding Fathers reminds us of the great men who made this country, but John Paul Jones teaches us that it took fighters as well as thinkers, men driven by dreams of personal glory as well as high-minded principle to break free of the past and start a new world. Jones' spirit was classically American.

Story
The American Revolution is often portrayed as a high-minded, orderly event whose capstone, the Constitution, provided the ideal framework for a democratic, prosperous nation. Alan Taylor, two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, gives us a different creation story in this magisterial history of the nation's founding. Rising out of the continental rivalries of European empires and their native allies, Taylor's Revolution builds like a ground fire overspreading Britain's mainland colonies, fueled by local conditions, destructive, hard to quell.

And through it all, we come to know a boy who, even as he longs for a wider world, does not want to be led, forever, out of Egypt.

Despite the risks, they had a better chance of survival than the rest of Convoy PQ-17, a fleet of 35 cargo ships carrying $1 billion worth of war supplies to the Soviet port of Archangel - the limited help Roosevelt and Churchill extended to Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin to maintain their fragile alliance.

This naval adventure compares most favorably to Lambdin and Kent.
I have never found an historical naval fiction novel of the US Navy most superb as this. mostly I am a fan of British Naval fiction as coming from Dewey Lambdin, C.S. Forester and Alexander Kent. This novel and I hope subsequent stories encompasses all the elements of those previously named authors. The details of gun practice are perhaps even better presented than that of the other authors. I really enjoyed those details and also the emotional feelings of all the characters in this wonderful story.

Excellent, worthy alongside CS Forester and O’Brian
A very enjoyable historical fiction work with characters that are real, adventurous, identifiable and heroic, all set in accurate fact. The writer knows when to delve deep into detail to set a mood and knows how to keep the characters interesting and their relationships compelling and relatable. This book, story and main character always kept my attention and wanting more. Reading by the voice actor was very well done and contributed to the enjoyable atmosphere. Highly recommend this book and audio version for anyone interested in the genre, especially wanting adventure of the early American Navy, the Tripolitan pirates and greatly neglected characters of Naval history. Well done.

Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood?
I’m not sure if it’s the writing or the narration, but it was often agonizing for me to listen to. Half the time I felt like I was listening to Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood

Enjoyable Listen!
It has a little bit of everything...tumultuous times, a little romance, and even a little humor here and there.
I enjoyed hearing about the historical aspects, such as how food was preserved during these times and just how different life was.
The narration is excellent with a variety of tones, pitches, and dictions so you can really tell the characters apart. Paul Boehmer has a very theatrical voice and reminds me of being at a Broadway play.
I love it!

Thoroughly enjoyable tale of the 1st Barbary war
A fascinating account of the operations if the fledgling US Navy. The author has obviously done extensive research and integrated it deftly into a superb Naval action tale.

Great yarn
Good combination of fiction and history of the war and Mediterranean history. Language and narrative are well done
