For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Publisher's summary
This brand-new unabridged audiobook of The Two Towers, the second part of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic adventure, The Lord of the Rings, is read by the BAFTA award-winning actor, director and author Andy Serkis.
The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go.
This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.
Critic reviews
"Masterpiece? Oh yes, I’ve no doubt about that." (Evening Standard)
"The English-speaking world is divided into those who have read The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and those who are going to read them." (Sunday Times)
An extraordinary book. It deals with a stupendous theme. It leads us through a succession of strange and astonishing episodes, some of them magnificent, in a region where everything is invented, forest, moor, river, wilderness, town and the races which inhabit them.’ (The Observer)

The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm’s Son was originally published in the 1953 edition of Essays and Studies. In December of that year, J.R.R. Tolkien took possession of a reel-to-reel tape recorder and, some time during the first few months of 1954, decided to record ‘the whole thing on tape’ as a way of ‘testing’ the performative quality of the dramatic dialogue between Tídwald and Torhthelm.

J.R.R. Tolkien famously described the Second Age of Middle-earth as a ‘dark age, and not very much of its history is (or need be) told’. And for many years readers would need to be content with the tantalizing glimpses of it found within the pages of The Lord of the Rings and its appendices, including the forging of the Rings of Power, the building of the Barad-dûr and the rise of Sauron.

Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place that might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. Particularly as it’s carried though space on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown). It plays by different rules. But then, some things are the same everywhere. The Disc’s very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world’s first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land.

Andy Serkis is the key
I've tried many times to read this classic trilogy, failing on all occasions but one. That successful undertaking was driven forward by a burning need stirred up by Peter Jackson. If only, back then, Andy's Audible performances had already existed, I would have loved every moment of that experience. Alas, I did not.
Fast forward to 2024, when Andy Serkis brought unabashed joy, excitement, fear and sadness to my written Tolkien world. What a voice! Whilst Gollum's first words sent an absolute thrill through me, every other character was brought to life just as effectively.
I couldn't recommend an audiobook/reader combination more highly than LOTR read by Andy Serkis.

Andy Serkis
Andy Serkis with his performance of this book joined the genius of storytelling of JRR Tolkien. Best 21 hours spent in the company of them all I love.

Profound writing
Listened to this at a time where carrying on felt impossible. The Hobbits taught me that hope only truly comes alive when all hope dies.

Incredible to listen too
The performance that Andy Serkis gives in this version of the two towers is incredible. It was nice to hear gollum’s voice again voicing all of the dialogue rather than snippets from the films. How Andy portrays the orcs is also amazing, each orc has a different voice which really adds to the depth of the story.
I also like the fact that the book is split in half, between the two sets of characters so it doesn’t feel jarring going from plot to plot. Would highly recommend.

Very good version with two hiccups
I loved it all in all except for two points.
The voice for Éowyn and the singing while doing the ent voice. The latter was seriously terrible.
But other than that it was amazing! Ever classical tale in a great rendition.
