Publisher's summary

A world-weary rake

After years of unbridled debauchery, Tristan Sinclair, Viscount St. Ashton has hit proverbial rock bottom. Seeking to escape his melancholy, he takes refuge at one of Victorian society's most notorious house parties. As the Christmas season approaches, he prepares to settle in for a month of heavy drinking...until an unexpected encounter changes his plans - and threatens his heart.

A prim vicar's daughter

Valentine March is not the drab little spinster she appears to be. When her new job as a lady's companion lands her smack in the middle of Yorkshire with England's most infamous rake, she resolves to keep her head down and her eyes fixed firmly on her future - a future which most definitely does not include a sinfully handsome viscount.

A match made in scandal

A friendship is impossible. An affair out of the question. But when one reckless act binds them together, will two star-crossed souls discover there's more to each other than meets the eye? Or will revelations from the past end their fragile romance before it begins?

Fun Easy Listen

The narrator, I think Justine Eyre is an excellent narrator. She does a good job with male and female characters especially the prim and proper. There are books I will give a chance because Justine Eyre reads them. I gave her 4 stars because this story could not provide what is needed for a 5 star read.
The story, I gave 2 stars. So I consider 5 stars to be Tolkien, C.S.Lewis, Agatha Christie and a few others.
I appreciate that there was no bodice ripping or unnecessary sex scenes. This story was good for what it was, a historical romance I could listen to while doing other things. It was not overly intense and the heroine was portrayed well. She fit the time but demonstrated her intelligence and strength while remaining basically correct for the era.
I recommend it for a fun quick listen.

Typical boy meets girl kn

Class differences impact happiness . When a rich man finds a penniless woman things get complicated, especially when neither one is honest in their declarations.

The Viscount and the Vicar’s Daughter

Love Justine Eyre’s narration.
Liked all the characters except Felicity(?) She needed a good whack on her posterior. Also like when there’s an epilogue. Recommend to young adults and up.

Disappointed

I love this author but found this short novel rather boring. Not much of a plot and I had trouble getting to know the characters.

another delightful read

Flew through this in a day (actually made jury duty bearable). I adore Mimi Matthews. I find the climaxes of her stories a wee bit lackluster sometimes, but that's not always a bad thing, especially when the romance is so good... I know a lot of people like her especially bc her romances are "clean", and if I have to choose (and usually we do) between heartfelt romance and bodice ripping, I will leave toward the forget, but I always find myself so engrossed in Mimi's characters' chemistry that I want a little more heat with the sweet - this was a touch spicier, which I appreciated, even if it was really just the one scene.

More than anything, I love that I can trust her to make me swoon for her heroes (their flaws and redemptive qualities always so well balanced, and the ruder they are at first, the more rewarding the redemption!). I find her heroines endearing too (nothing worse than an irritating, unreasonable, unrelatable, or overly wimpy h) - and Tristan and Valentine were no exception.

Finally, Justine Eyre is amazing. Apart from Alex Wyndham (double swoon), I don't think I could ever accept anyone else reading Matthews to me. This trifecta has become such a favorite recently that I worry about finding anything as entertaining/satisfying while I'm waiting for Parish Orphans book 4 (or for Richard Armitage to do another Georgette Heyer novel....) Suggestions anyone? 😁

One struggle…

The only thing that took away from this story for me was the narrator. I just can’t get used to her nasal voice.

Lovely Work

This is a beautiful love story between two people from different classes, both at near rock bottom. Ms. Matthews has once again created wonderfully complex characters with a great storyline.
Justine Eyre delivers a great narration of the audio version.
