Historia
As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

The Yaga siblings—Bellatine, a young woodworker, and Isaac, a wayfaring street performer and con artist—have been estranged since childhood, separated both by resentment and by wide miles of American highway. Historia
In the 12 unforgettable tales of Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century, the strange is made familiar and the familiar strange, such that a girl growing wings on her legs feels like an ordinary rite of passage, while a bug-infested house becomes an impossible Kafkaesque nightmare. Each story builds a new world all its own: A group of children steal a haunted doll; a runaway bride encounters a sea monster; a vendor sells toy boxes that seemingly control the passage of time; an insomniac is seduced by the Sandman.

When Mackenzie wakes up with a severed crow's head in her hands, she panics. Only moments earlier she had been fending off masses of birds in a snow-covered forest. In bed, when she blinks, the head disappears. Night after night, Mackenzie’s dreams return her to a memory from before her sister Sabrina’s untimely death: a weekend at the family’s lakefront campsite, long obscured by a fog of guilt.

One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth century author of The Underland, who disappeared over a hundred years ago. All she left behind were dark rumors—and her home. Historia
Charlie7 is the progenitor of a mechanical race he built from the ashes of a dead world—Earth. He is a robot of leisure and idle political meddling—a retirement well-earned. Or he was, until a human girl named Eve was dropped in his lap. Geneticists have restored Earth’s biome and begun repopulation. But primate cloning is in its infancy; human cloning is banned. Far from a failed genetics experiment, Eve is brilliant, curious, and heartbreakingly naïve about her species’ history. But Eve’s creator wants her back and has a gruesome fate planned for her.

Years ago, when plagues and natural disasters killed millions of people, much of the world stopped dreaming. Without dreams, people are haunted, sick, mad, unable to rebuild. The government soon finds that the Indigenous people of North America have retained their dreams, an ability rumored to be housed in the very marrow of their bones. Soon, residential schools pop up — or are re-opened — across the land to bring in the dreamers and harvest their dreams.

Grace has never been good at anything except magic—not that anyone believes her. While other children are adopted from the orphanage, nobody wants Grace. So she decides to make a home for herself by running away and offering herself as an apprentice to the witch in the nearby woods. After all, who better to teach Grace to use her magic? Surely the witch can’t be that bad. But the witch is that bad—she steals souls for spells and gobbles up hearts. Resumen del Editor
"Once I opened VenCo, I was propelled through an entire night of charmed reading. Cherie Dimaline creates a world utterly fantastical, yet real. VenCo is funny, tense, and cracking with a dark, divine energy."—Louise Erdrich, New York Times bestselling author of The Sentence
For fans of The Once and Future Witches and Practical Magic, comes an incredibly imaginative, highly anticipated new novel featuring witches, magic, and a road trip across America—from Cherie Dimaline, the critically acclaimed author of Empire of Wild.
Métis millennial Lucky St. James is barely hanging on when she learns she’ll be evicted from the tiny Toronto apartment she shares with her cantankerous but loving grandmother Stella. But then one night, something strange and irresistible calls out to Lucky. She burrows through a wall to find a tarnished silver spoon, humming with otherworldly energy, etched with a crooked-nosed witch and the word SALEM.
Lucky is familiar with the magic of her indigenous ancestors, but she has no idea that the spoon connects her to a teeming network of witches across North America who have anxiously awaited her discovery.
Enter VenCo, a front company fueled by vast resources of dark money (its name is an anagram of “coven.”) VenCo’s witches hide in plain sight wherever women gather: Tupperware parties, Mommy & Me classes, suburban book clubs. Since colonial times, they have awaited the moment the seven spoons will come together and ignite a new era, returning women to their rightful power.
But as reckoning approaches, a very powerful adversary is stalking their every move. He’s Jay Christos, a roguish and deadly witch-hunter as old as witchcraft itself.
To find the last spoon, Lucky and Stella embark on a rollicking and dangerous road trip to the darkly magical city of New Orleans, where the final showdown will determine whether VenCo will usher in a new beginning…or remain underground forever.
A wildly imaginative and compulsively enjoyable fantasia of adventure, history, Americana, feminism, and magic, VenCo is a novel only the supremely gifted Cherie Dimaline could write.
“Crackling with magic, mystery, adventure, and intrigue, VenCo is a captivating tribute to the bonds of families we are born into and the ones that we create, and a delightful testament to the power of all womankind.”—Nikki Erlick, New York Times bestselling author of The Measure

Secrets and lies can’t stay buried forever in Cedar Valley. In the summer, hikers and campers pack the small Colorado town’s meadows and fields. And in the winter, skiers and snowboarders take over the mountains. Season by season, year after year, time passes, and the lies, like the aspens and evergreens that surround the town, take root and spread deep. Now, someone has uncovered the lies, and it is his murder that continues a chain of events that began almost 40 years ago.

It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

In 1995, six university students moved into the house at 215 Caldwell Street. Months later, one of them was found dead on the sofa the morning after their end-of-year party. His death was ruled an accident by the police. The remaining five all knew it wasn’t, and though they went on with their lives, the truth of what happened to their sixth housemate couldn’t stay buried forever. Twenty years later, all five of them arrive - lured separately under various pretenses - at Wolfheather House, a crumbling, secluded mansion on the Scottish isle of Doon.

It is a perfect July morning, and Elle, a 50-year-old happily married mother of three, awakens at “The Paper Palace” - the family summer place she has visited every summer of her life. But this morning is different: Last night, Elle and her oldest friend, Jonas, crept out the back door into the darkness and had sex with each other for the first time, all while their spouses chatted away inside. Now, Elle will have to decide between the life she has made with her genuinely beloved husband and the life she always imagined she would have had with her childhood love.

The town of Northfall, Minnesota, will never be the same. Meteors cratered hardwood forests and annihilated homes, and among the wreckage a new metal was discovered. This “omnimetal” has properties that make it world-changing as an energy source…and a weapon. John Frontier returns for his sister’s wedding to find his family embroiled in a cutthroat war to control mineral rights and mining operations. His father rightly suspects foreign leaders and competing corporations of sabotage, but the greatest threat to his legacy might be the US government.

When a banished witch falls in love with the legendary trickster Loki, she risks the wrath of the gods in this moving, subversive debut novel that reimagines Norse mythology. Angrboda’s story begins where most witches' tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love.

Bewitching!!!
I bought this book because I loved Cherie's other books! I started it without knowing what it was about, and couldn't stop listening! It made me feel everything: love, heartbreak, stress, anxiety, fantasy, family, and friendship. Grandma Stella is a hoot! I hope the story continues...❤️

Unnecessary foul language
The underlying story was ok. However, the redeemable qualifies were obscured by the unnecessary and flagrant swearing. It reminded me of a movie that includes violence for the sake of violence and not to advance the plot.

Mispronunciations a bummer
A book about witches with Hecate pronounced Heck-ate? Come on, now. The narrator is well selected, but there are multiple wild mispronunciations that caused me to cringe. Not on her: that stuff should get caught. The story takes a minute to get rolling, but gets better as it goes. I will say I was stunned to see “42 minutes remaining” when it felt like the plot was only starting to come into focus. This feels like the first in a series. I hope there are more, because I really liked the energy and the characters once the book found its stride.

Loved this book
I loved the modern take on a coven and all the interwoven stories of the women types of magic. The pace was quick, there was plenty of suspense, and the imagery was engrossing. Definitely would recommend it.

What an exciting adventure!
I loved this book, the storyline was so sweet and fun and spellbinding!
The relationship between the main character and her grandmother was so real, and represented the love and frustrations that come with caring for an aged family member, but so sweet and touching!
The plot line of women finding themselves and each other is a world so many long for. The arc and storyline were captivating and fun! I loved the witch and magic, but loved that is was so much more than that.
The narrator was lovely! Would 100% recommend!

Fun, but ended so quickly!
I liked the story, and found it very fun! It ended climaxed rather rapidly, and it felt like there would be more when it was suddenly ending. The narrator brought down my enjoyment a bit.
She was an okay narrator, not great at differentiating between voices much, but what really got on my nerves were the gasps of breath between each phrase. It was as if the whole thing was read during an action sequence, which most of the book was not. Since the gasping sound was so consistent, I wish some sound editors could have edited it out! The narrator also didn’t pronounce some words correctly (Hecate as “heck-eight” was an egregious one that should have been caught.

Can I please live in this book?
This was an absolutely delightful book, down to the last sentence. It’s one of the most truly feminist stories I have ever read, or I guess heard in this case. It’s darkly hilarious, effortlessly inclusive, and even utopian in a queer and witchy kind of way. All the characters were beautifully messy and uniquely themselves, even the villain. A must read, especially for anyone who wants to “hex the patriarchy.” I want to live in this book. Hopefully I’ll be finding my little spoon soon..

Wish it could be so.
I enjoyed the story and the character development. If I felt lost when a new character popped up, things were cleared up quickly.
Some study of New Orleans pronunciations would have been great. Maringy and Chartres are not pronounced as in French. They are Marinee (long e like in knee) and Charters. Lafitte is pronounced Lafeet. Good job on Prytania though!
