Publisher's summary
A ghost's antics, a harrowing moose chase, a hypnosis session, and smuggled booze lead to spilled secrets and betrayal, but do they also lead to murder?
At a hot springs retreat in Montana, whiskey-swigging Maude, the nearly eighty-year-old chef, longs for the glory days when the retreat hosted martini-sipping celebrities instead of long-haired hippies who refuse to wear deodorant.
Brooke, feisty, adventurous, and a bit reckless, proposes a reunion at the retreat with her best friends to get away from the chaos of her life with teenagers and the emotional aftermath of her postponed wedding. One of those friends, Tracy, has devoted her life to her children and her husband despite her excruciating boredom. But a long-held secret could cost her the most important friendships in her life.
Haunting the place is a ghost who, in life, dealt with tragedy by turning to prostitution which led to her murder over 100 years ago at the very place they all are staying.
What Happens in Montana explores friendship, betrayal, and forgiveness with blunt truth and witty insights. Together, these friends learn to navigate empty nests, infidelity, deception, and poltergeists. Most importantly, they learn their friendship is strong enough to get them through it all.
Critic reviews
“...a beautifully written tale of strong female relationships that draws you in from the beginning and won’t let go. Reading this book is like spending the afternoon with comforting friends. Enjoy the experience.” –Diane Dickinson, author of Final Transaction

Story
In The Worst of You, just-wed architects Timo and Nia flee a murder scene, setting in motion a chain reaction of lies and betrayals that threaten to unravel everything they have built together. Twisted and propulsive, this thriller is told from the alternating perspectives of the couple and those close to them on Williwaw Island, each with their own motive to use the outcome of the murder case to their advantage. When a huge storm sweeps up the coast, trapping everyone on tiny Williwaw Island, it’s a race against time—and the elements — to stop the murderer from striking again.

As an ER doctor, I'm used to surprises, but my best friend’s little sister—and now my son's nanny—is the one emergency I never saw coming. She’s supposed to be tending to scrapes and telling bedtime stories, not sending my pulse racing with every smile. I've got my hands full with ER shifts and single fatherhood; I don't have time for wild nights with the nanny. I keep telling myself she’s just a temporary temptation, but who am I kidding? The more I try to resist, the more I want her. Our agreement was simple: keep it quiet, keep it casual, nobody needs to know. Especially not ...

One of Audible's BEST readers!!!!
I'm usually a Historic Novel kind of reader but this book was recommended and I loved it (start to finish) from the very first sentence! The reader, Kathleen Godwin, had me captivated the entire time. I just loved her voice and delivery and she made the story so easy to follow and listen to. The book was good.... the narrator was great. I want to hear more from her.

5 STARS
This is a women’s fiction book. It follows two different timelines. A modern one who has 4 friends reuniting at a health retreat for a reunion of their mommy and mr group 20 years later.
The retreat is haunted by a ghost or ghosts from long ago.
There are many secrets, betrayals, heartbreak and more. I could not stop listening to eat lunch. I hope to find more from this author.
The narration was done by Kathleen Godwin. She brought these characters to life.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
