More than 700 years into its journey, a massive generation starship carries thousands of passengers to a new home that only their descendants - hundreds more years into the future - will live to see. Life aboard the ship is a daily struggle. One young welder copes by writing a series of letters to an Earth he never knew. The experiences he describes are not as exciting as the ancient works of science fiction made it out to be - but that is about to change. Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Story
AD 2150: Chris Randall just lost his job as a bodyguard. That night, after picking up his wife, Bree, from her shift at a local casino, he breaks the bad news. Moments later, thunder cracks the sky, but there’s no lightning. Flaming debris rain across the valley, and a dark mass goes sailing out of the clouds, headed straight for LA. It’s not one of the Union’s starships, because they can’t defy gravity like that. But then, what is it? The answer chills both Chris and Bree to their cores: It’s an invasion.

Aliens ripped a hole above Earth, arriving with a massive space station. I sorta figured we'd be enslaved to fight in their wars or exterminated for our resources. Nope. The hip-high Iglax were merchants with ugly squished faces and thick blue fur. While they weren't much to look at, they sure did have some wonderous technology.

Thousands of crew are reported dead, including the ship’s captain. Reluctantly, the young XO, Galvin Quintos, will be taking command of the fleet's crippled dreadnaught, the USS Hamilton, while doing his best to bring fleet survivors back to Earth. To make matters worse, there’s a murderer running loose on board the ship, critically low fuel levels, and the Grish are back, in fast pursuit and ready to finish what they’d started. Only by sheer luck - and a good measure of cagey smarts - will Quintos be able to rise to the challenge.

Publisher's summary
The Eden Project was a dream. To start the first extra-solar colony... To avoid the mistakes of our past... To start anew.
Three generations, born and raised on a starship hurtling through space. To never know an open sky... To never feel the wind on their face... To never witness the sun rise or set.
It is up to the advance team to set foot on each of these worlds, conduct their surveys, and send their findings back to the colony ship. So many questions... So little time... Such an enormous responsibility.
Everything must go as planned, for the welfare of all the colonists depends on them.

Recently split from his one-time girlfriend, there was now nothing holding Cameron Decker here in the little backwater mountain town of Larksburg Stand. Time to get back to college, back to Stanford. Seeing a guy knee-deep in slush at the side of the road, he pulled to the curb and waved him over. The guy smacked his head getting in - knocked his watch cap askew. Only then did Cameron notice - noticed that the individual couldn't possibly be human. Cameron decided to help his stranded passenger - a decision he'd soon come to regret. Along with his rust-bucket of a pickup truck, he was soon heading deep into space aboard an interstellar spacecraft. Convicted criminal James Griffin-Mars is no one's hero. In his time, Earth is a toxic, abandoned world, and humans have fled into the outer solar system to survive, eking out a fragile, doomed existence among the other planets and their moons. Those responsible for delaying humanity's demise believe time travel holds the key, and they have identified James, troubled though he is, as one of a select and expendable few ideally suited for the most dangerous job in history.

Geoff and his friends live in Phocaea, a distant asteroid colony on the Solar System's frontier. They're your basic high-spirited young adults, enjoying such pastimes as hacking matter compilers to produce dancing skeletons that prance through the low-gee communal areas, using their rocket-bikes to salvage methane ice shrapnel that flies away when the colony brings in a big (and vital) rock of the stuff, and figuring out how to avoid the ubiquitous surveillance motes.

When humanity reaches for the stars, our probes are destroyed. They crash into an incredibly advanced piece of technology: a massive force-field. Unknown beings have placed a barrier around our star and planets, enclosing us within. We’re locked inside a Great Sphere. Was this invisible obstacle built to imprison us - or to protect us? They tried to destroy our planets. Our way of life. They tried to send us into extinction. But we, the Coalition, fought them and won. That was a decade ago. They’re known as the Host: a cabal of aliens seeking to dominate our sector of space. And they’re back - with help from a powerful new enemy. We’re outnumbered and unprepared. But there is hope. An ancient race of long-dead but technologically advanced aliens called the Navigators have a ship called the Blackstar that could potentially turn the tide. That is if I, Kai Locke, a humble ship racer, can find it and learn how to harness its power in time.

Would it make you happy? Not likely! Now imagine you're stronger, faster, and more coordinated than every alien species you encounter. Would you start kicking some ass? Of course you would! The very far future: The galaxy is a drifting wreck of black holes, neutron stars, and chill white dwarfs. The age of star formation is long past. Yet there is life here, feeding off the energies of the stellar remnants, and there is mind, a tremendous galaxy-spanning intelligence each of whose thoughts lasts a hundred thousand years. Almost 400 years the Terran Imperium has languished, an Empire in name only. The young colonies exploded out of the Diaspora Era, supplanting the homeworld in importance as they left a broken world in their wake. Earth's people, guided by the Conwin line, have clawed and climbed from the darkness left the night the lights went out. They built and rebuilt the weary and weakened world they inherited, even when it seemed bent on killing them from sheer spite.

Great story
I loved the story line it's self, kind of a tear jerker and made me laugh and smile at times. I just wish the author had given more distinct details when trying to describe alien wildlife

Huhhhhhh, poor story
I read arrival with the original narrator and suffered through it and was happy with the last quarter of the book.
The new narrator, Jeffrey Cafer is great and it was very nice of the writer to pay for Jeffrey K. to re-narrate the book, great job!.
However the story is just boring. Yet, if you are a big fan of this book Series as I am, I would still recommend reading the book as the last quarter of the book is important. This is, without a doubt, the most uneventful and boring book out of the entire series. However, one of the books has to be the worst book out of the entire series, so says statistics. Lol.

Gripping
I have enjoyed reading Ryk Brown’s books over the past few years. I came across this book when searching to see what Brown had written. It is an earlier book as it was published in March of 2016.
The book has an interesting plot as well as characters. The book is obviously one of his early attempts as it is not as polished as his current books. I think this could make an interesting series if Brown brings it up to current standards. I did enjoy the book as well as observing how he has improved his writing skills.
The book is fourteen hours and fifty-seven minutes. Jeffrey Kafer does an excellent job narrating the book. Kafer has narrated all of Brown’s books.

What a letdown!
The story is adequate, but then devolves into a silly, illogical, and insulting climax. It was a good premise, but a lousy rendition.

Wow. This is so amazingly bad.
I’ve never felt compelled to leave a review before, good or bad. But 15 minutes in and I’m trying to figure out how to get my credit back. In theory I should “give the book time to grow on me”. And usually when I don’t like a book I do just that. And sometimes it grows and other times it doesn’t. And that’s okay. But this. Wow. It’s soooo bad. Primary point is that if I’m going to listen to sci-fi written in the modern era I want it to at the very least make use of technology and computing from the early 2000s. I have no interest in listening to sci-fi that could have taken place in 1950…which brings me to the strong genius man weak stupid woman dynamic. Jesus. Suffice to say, if you are under the age of 70 this book is not for you. Seriously. Is there a way to get my credit back?
