Publisher's summary

Charlie Jonquil is mild-mannered and kind — except when it comes to his one true adversary, Artemis Lancaster. Though Charlie has a brilliant mind for mathematics, Artemis poses a problem he can’t seem to comprehend: How can one be so lovely and so infuriating? A party in London brings him into the company of the maddening young lady, and it is clear that Charlie’s disdain is mutual. But when an unfortunate incident between the pair involving Charlie’s jacket and a glass of raspberry shrub leads to scandal, the sworn enemies are left with only two options: Be ruined or be married.

So it is that Artemis finds herself in a most outrageous predicament: She must wed a gentleman she’s hated for years — and she pledges to avoid him at all costs. But it is only when they enter into this mockery of a marriage that Charlie and Artemis learn things are not as simple as they once appeared. As their tentative ceasefire leads to friendship, it seems their marriage born of desperation might lead them to a love that was destined to be.

Beautiful Ending

I have been reading these books one at a time as they've come out over the years. I really grew attached to this family and I feel like one of them myself. I have suspected that these two would end up together for a while now. It was as satisfying and loving as I hoped it would be. A beautiful ending to a wonderful series.

A Charming full circle ending

Sarah writes with such masterful orchestration of each great writing tool. Stories that retell myths in a manner that feels completely fresh and unconstrained to any “formula”. Each of her stories are uniquely interesting, yet cohesive to the whole narrative. And this one brings together not one but three series. Charlie’s and Artimises story could certainly be enjoyed on its own but that would be a shallow enjoyment compared to the richness of coming to it after reading the entire Jonquil (including the Gents series) and Lancaster series in chronological order as the stories interweave. (Including at least “The Best Laid Plans” from the huntress series… ) The depth at which one knows each character by the time this story is reached is priceless and makes every development that much more meaningful. Which brings me to my favorite aspect of Sarah’s stories. Each one is an inspiration and a guide to being one’s best and most loving unselfish self in every relationship of life. This is why I find myself reading these two series along with the huntress series and the Gents (please write a story for each of them. They deserve it… ) pretty much every year. When I find myself struggling with self centeredness in my relationships I turn to the Lancasters and the Jonquils to remind me that love and family are my most important values and they are the only ones that can lead to true happiness. So Sarah, thank you for being my story therapist! Such a lovely, disarming and charming way to be encouraged and inspired to be my best self all while being swept up into vicarious membership in a beautiful perfectly imperfect extended family.

Loved it

I'd already read the book but just listened to this audio version and loved it. I loved the story itself even better the second time around and I loved the narrator. She does a wonderful job with the voices.

Brilliant ending for the Lancaster and Jonquil families' series. But I'm so conflicted. I was so excited to get this book and then so sad to know it is the last one. So am I happy or sad? Both I suppose. I never wanted the series to end but if it has to end, this book was a really sweet way for it to do so. Emotions run high through out the story. There is some grief and sorrow but also so much love and acceptance. The story belongs to Artemis and Charlie but in concluding the series, the book also included all the important people. We got new information and wonderful connections. Many doubts and fears are resolved and everyone really can move forward.
While this book can stand alone I think, it is probably best to read through the books in order to get the full experience. I reread both series in anticipation of this book. It was wonderful to read them all in a short period of time. I really have loved these books. I feel like I'm saying good-bye to old friends in finishing the series. Sigh....

Sex: mild innuendo from a creep
Language: no
Violence: a bit

my favorite eden story yet.

it will Likely be my favorite until Lilly of the valley comes out. I love all the Jonquil and Lancaster stories, and this is the last and the best so far. I admit to being impatient for the next one in the huntress series.

Artemis was my favorite character in my first eden story, witch was seeking persephone, ever since I heard that story until now I wondered what her story would be. it is very satisfying and somewhat painful to have this story, knowing it is the last one in the Lancaster family, at least of this generation of stories.
most romances of this Era usually portray the heroine in a rather helpless way, as if they couldn't walk without the assistance of a gentleman, this story is the way I like it.
for instance, look at the difference between lady Cavarat and Artemis, in their handling of Mr Finley, I liked lady Cavarat a lot, in her own way, but I still think every woman in that time as well as now should be able to handle situations like that, weather their self defense was verbal or physical.

my favorite heroines are women who can fight their own battles, wether with whit or force, inasmuch as their battles are for the good.

Luone Ingram brought this story to life with her excellent performance. and to tell the truth the narrator is a large part of the character of the story overall, as with this whole series she is an enormous part of who the people in these stories are to me.

not to put the author down in any way, but the narrator makes a big difference. 👌

thanks Sarah M Eden for another wonderful story, I look forward to those in the future.

A tender culmination of two worlds combining.

Loved every minute. The Lancasters and Jonquils have been my escape for a few years now - I've loved each of their stories. Having them all reunited and all of the lose ends tenderly tied together was sweet and satisfying. I didn't want it to end!

Exceptional!!

There is so much good happening in this book. The blending of these families is masterful. Each of these beloved characters is given their moment to shine while making a meaningful contribution to the story. In addition to the exceptional story, the narration is extraordinary!! Thank you so much for providing these hours of heartfelt enjoyment . . .

Wow… This book brought everything full circle

I was amazed at how this book connected many if not all of the series that Sarah M. Eden has written. I loved the John Quill‘s brother series, and have really enjoyed starting to listen to the gents series… And I’m about to start the huntress series. This book has made all of them relevant to each other and explain some of the nuances that I did not understand as I was reading the other books. Loved loved loved it
