Publisher's summary

Uncover everything you need to know about "deepfakes" and what could become the biggest information and communications meltdown in world history.

In a world of deepfakes, it will soon be impossible to tell what is real and what isn't. As advances in artificial intelligence, video creation, and online trolling continue, deepfakes pose not only a real threat to democracy - they threaten to take voter manipulation to unprecedented new heights. This crisis of misinformation we now face has since been dubbed the "Infocalypse".

In Deepfakes, investigative journalist Nina Schick uses her expertise from working in the field to reveal shocking examples of deepfakery and explain the dangerous political consequences of the Infocalypse, both in terms of national security and what it means for public trust in politics. This all-too-timely book also unveils what this all means for us as individuals, how deepfakes will be used to intimidate and to silence, for revenge and fraud, and just how truly unprepared governments and tech companies are for what's coming.

Important Book

I work in cybersecurity and I must say there isn’t a more important book that has come out. Nina did an excellent job with this audio book and I strongly recommend it.

Interesting, but absolutely no critical examination

The author repeatedly claims that things are “dangerous” and discusses “disinformation” without actually exploring if these claims are true. Her stories are not illustrative of the deep dangers she predicts deep fakes/ai pose, nor of the harm they’ve caused. I wish this book had more disciplined exploration of counterclaims. Came off like a propaganda piece because it was not even slightly interested in seeking truth 🤨

Nothing new if you’re techie

Feels like the audience for this is the vastly uninformed who’ve been asleep for the last 7 years. Nothing new exposed for anyone remotely techie.

Now more important than ever

Although this doesn’t delve into the newest AI such as ChatGPT and others it was a harbinger to what we face today. We must follow the old adage “don’t believe everything you read “. That applies now to the internet and especially social media.

WARNING: this book is potentially a Trojan Horse

Most of the book is excellent. However, toward the end the author defends Communist Party of China (CPC) for not cooperating with international investigations on whether COVID-19 leaked from Wuhan lab because “these investigations were politically motivated.” She also presents Wuhan lab origin theory as a conspiracy theory. Granted, she may not be aware of congressional investigation panel recently concluding formally that there’s evidence of Wuhan leak origin, but she should have been aware of scientific community unrelated to CPC saying from the beginning that the stricture of the virus is unlikely to occur naturally. I don’t want to accuse her of deliberate misinformation but it felt like she went out of her way to defend CPC on this.

Excellent summary of the problem

Nina lays out the problem well. After the last four years of blurring the line between truth and fiction we have a long way to go before we are back to being a healthy society

Totally biased! Parts were even laughable!

The author's extreme left BLIND SPOT BIAS made many parts of this book incredulous! It's really too bad since parts of the book were informative.
