Publisher's summary

Feel like your kids just won't listen? Tired of having to yell and repeat yourself just to be heard?

Every parent has dealt with the frustration of a child who won't listen. Whether it's asking them to do chores, or reminding them of household rules, it can sometimes feel like your kid is tuning you out entirely.

When you have to remind them for the fifth time to clean up their room or put away toys, it's only natural to feel frustrated and annoyed.

You know that you need to discipline your child to help them understand what behaviors are and aren't appropriate. But how exactly are you supposed to do that?

No parent wants to be a taskmaster, or spend the majority of their time with their kids nagging or punishing them, but sometimes it may feel like you have no choice.

There is another way.

Learning how to properly discipline your child can actually help you to develop a stronger, more positive bond with them over the years. They'll find security and reassurance in the consistency of consequences, both positive and negative.

Filled with practical advice like what to do after you've yelled at your child, and how to help them regulate their emotions, this guide offers all you need to know to effectively enforce discipline without damaging your child's self-esteem, or straining your relationship.

In Discipline Like a Pro, here is just a fraction of what you will discover:

  • The distinction between discipline and punishment, and why it's so important to know the difference.
  • Why your child misbehaves, and what you can do about it.
  • Strategies like active ignoring and positive reinforcement that will help shape your kid’s behavior without forcing them to do things.
  • Age-appropriate advice for managing toddler, preschoolers, and grade-school age kids.
  • How to identify your parenting style, and why it has such a big impact on your kid's development.
  • Common parenting mistakes and pitfalls—how to avoid them and become a more effective disciplinarian.
  • Six simple steps to give effective timeouts without tearing your hair out in frustration.
  • How to manage and prevent typical problems like ignoring, defiance, and lying.
  • Four steps for staying calm in high-stress situations, even when you're both upset and irritated.

And much more!

You might be feeling like the challenges you and your child face are too unique to be addressed in a single audiobook, or that there's no real solution to those problems. The truth is, many of the disciplinary struggles parents experience are more common than they think.

Within this guide, you'll find a way to manage even the most frustrating of behaviors in a loving, productive way.

Don't spend another minute arguing with your child. Start building your relationship instead!

What a timely book ❤️

Could there be a better time to produce a book on how parents can properly disciple their children? During these times, we have been experiencing depression, anxiety, and social dysfunction, and our children are developing unhealthy behaviors. This book will help parents correct, destructive behaviors before it's too late. This book is a bust read. I wish I had access to this book while raising my children. I will pass this knowledge on.

How to Discipline Without Punishing

Parenting is DIFFICULT, and this book is a great way to learn how to do it. And one of the hardest things for parents to do is to teach their kids how to behave without punishing them. No parent is perfect, but this book can help them avoid some of the most common mistakes. Also, every child is different and may need a different way of doing things.

This book starts with the goal of using discipline to teach kids how to behave and set limits, parents can give their kids emotional coaching and reason. Parents can teach lessons by helping kids work through their thoughts and problems. So, guardians can learn to build strong bonds with their children and teach them to respect each other. I think this book is a great way for parents of children to build strong, meaningful relationships with their kids.

Interesting Take

Discipline Like a Pro takes you on a guided tour for how to discipline your children. It was very different from the way I was raised, and I was fascinated by the differences. It's a good guide that I'll be able to use when disciplining my own children. Give it a try if you're struggling with unruly kids.

Great book!

As a single parent of kids 4 and 6, I found this book immensely beneficial. I particularly enjoyed the section about types of parenting styles so that I could determine where I fit in and the impact my discipline is likely to have as my children grow older. With many very real and relatable examples, Alfie Thomas clearly shows what discipline is, how it differs from punishment, and the appropriate ways a parent can lovingly discipline to raise responsible, well-adjusted and caring kids to adulthood. It was helpful to have each age group: toddlers, preschoolers, and young children specifically addressed. The narrator has a very nice voice and was very expressive, which kept me engaged in the content.

I recommend this book for parents who find they are yelling more than they'd like to be, those who are frustrated with misbehaviour, and those who just want to ensure they are paving a good road forward.

Parents, you can do this!

A wonderful toolkit for all parents and caregivers! I loved the explanations of the different types of actions and related consequences for all age groups. The connections between the age old "how we were raised" versus the proven by scientific evidence ways of parenting were well presented. The author did a great job using everyday examples of parenting struggles to help readers understand better and easier ways of parenting. The parenting strategies included are easy to understand and simple enough to apply to everyday routines. Will definitely recommend this book to everyone I know who could use a little assist with their kids. Great work!

This has been an eye-opening experience!

I've always considered myself to be a great dad but know there are plenty of things I can improve on. I didn't realize how much until listening to this audiobook. I love that it is relatable to most parents and covers many scenarios and gives many examples of situations parents go through on a regular basis. It makes me feel less alone when wondering if others go through the same difficulties with their kids. I've realized I do a lot of good things in this book already, but have learned so many different ways to handle certain situations and I am grateful for this since I always want to be the best father I can be! We're all only human and make mistakes, but with advice like this, I can see a ton of improvements I want to work towards in the near future! Highly recommend to parents who feel like they may not always have the best approach with raising their kids.

Loved Listening to it

This audiobook is terrific, particularly if you want a refresher lesson on disciplining respectfully with children. It is an excellent manual that I can refer to while instructing my children on appropriate behavior. It has been suggested that effective tactics include establishing limits, presenting options, redirecting, and utilizing humor to calm the situation. It is vital for there to be behavioral changes to teach youngsters to comprehend how the actions they choose may damage someone else and to assign real consequences to their actions. Decades of experience as a teacher in both public and private schools convinces me that the information presented in this book is quite useful!! Insightful and energizing are two words that come to mind.
