Once upon a time, there was a forgotten era of magic and monster. But the remnants—and all memory—of the old world have been replaced by the sane, the scientific, and the rational. But sometimes the magical past isn’t content to stay past. That’s where Jack Damian comes in. It’s his joy to protect our present from the supernatural remnants of an earlier time, a different history. It’s his job to make the past safe. Considered by the author to be his finest work yet, this is a novel of realistic detail, heartfelt emotion, and dazzling imagination that builds a world listeners won't want to leave and spins a tale they won't want to end. In a town of amazing magicks, where the real and the imagined live side by side and the Faerie of legend know the automatons of the future, Time sees all - but even he cannot escape the prophecy of James Hart's return, which can only mean the death of Shadows Fall.

Taylor is the name, John Taylor. My card says I'm a detective, but what I really am is an expert on finding lost things. It's part of the gift I was born with as a child of the Nightside. I left there a long time ago, with my skin and sanity barely intact. Now I make my living in the sunlit streets of London. But business has been slow lately, so when Joanna Barrett showed up at my door, reeking of wealth, asking me to find her runaway teenage daughter, I didn't say no.

Rupert didn't especially want to be a prince. And he certainly never asked to be the second son of a royal line that really didn't need a spare. So he was sent out to slay a dragon and prove himself - a quest straight out of legend. But he also discovered the kinds of things legends tend to leave out, as well as the usual demons, goblins, the dreaded Night Witch - and even worse terrors hidden in the shadows of Darkwood. Now, on the run from Imperial starcruisers, shady mercenaries, and just about everyone else in the Empire, Owen's options are limited.

Sherlock Holmes is an unparalleled genius. Warlock Holmes is an idiot. A font of arcane power, certainly. But he’s brilliantly dim. Frankly, he couldn’t deduce his way out of a paper bag. The only thing he has really got going for him are the might of a thousand demons and his stalwart companion. Thankfully, Dr. Watson is always there to aid him through the treacherous shoals of Victorian propriety...and save him from a gruesome death every now and again.

Story
For most people, the story of their lives is just that: the accumulation of time, encounters, and actions into a cohesive whole. But for an unfortunate few, that day-to-day existence is affected - perhaps infected is a better word - by memetic incursion: where fairy tale narratives become reality, often with disastrous results.

The world had become used to the metahumans - people sometimes perfectly ordinary, but sometimes quite extraordinary in appearance - who mostly worked with their governments as high-powered peace officers, fighting crime, and sometimes fighting rogue metahumans who had become super-criminals. Then that comfortable world ended in just one terrifying day.

Story
Mad scientists have never had it so tough. In super-hero comics, graphic novels, films, TV series, video games, and even works of what may be fiction, they are besieged by those who stand against them, devoid of sympathy for their irrational, megalomaniacal impulses to rule, destroy, or otherwise dominate the world as we know it. It’s just not fair. So those of us who are so twisted and sick that we love mad scientists have created this guide.

More Interesting then book 1
I enjoyed this story much more then book 1 but do have to say book 1 set up the characters well for book 2. I have read this author before on a different series with I like immensely and that is why I purchased these 2 books in the first place.

Ghost Finder, another good Simon R Green series
Simon R Green, prolific author of the Nightside and Secret Histories series scores another hit with the Ghost Finders. Ghost of a smile is the sequel to Ghost of a Chance and in order to understand much of what is going on here, you should really listen to (or read) Ghost of a Chance first. The protagonists, each somewhat off putting on the surface, have a much deeper depth of character and come together to become a cohesive and compassionate team who truly care for each other. The ending leaves no doubt more is to follow, and I look forward to the next installment. Whether or not you are lucky enough to be a fan of Green, I highly recommend this series.

Another Simon Green
If you could sum up Ghost of A Smile in three words, what would they be?
Another Simon Green. Dialogue and characters are the usual ones in Green???s books. There are no surprises but it is an enjoyable Green book but with a cliff hanger.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Ghost of A Smile?
The love scene with the ghost and ghost buster.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
no
Any additional comments?
I do not like cliff hangers. If I had known that I would not have purchased it.

I'm a Simon R Green fan
If you are too, you won't be disappointed, there is some dry humor, and some really nasty scary situations, that the ghost hunters endure. I'm enjoying this series (this is book 2) can't wait for the next installment. I think the narrator does a fine job with the voice inflections, so I find it easy to follow who's talking. If you are a SRG fan I thing it's well worth a listen.

Another great series from Simon R Green.
This is a great second story from the new Ghost Finder series. Ghost of a smile really builds on the original characters of Ghost of a chance, fleshing out the four central characters and providing more of a look at those around them. The story of Ghost of a smile provides a lot of room for expansion bringing in several new plots and sub plots that will probably form the basis of what could be a really great series. The only negative I could say about this book is that Simon R Greens' sense of humour is a little bit British and may not appeal to all. But if you liked The Nightside or The Secret Histories you'll love Ghost Finders.

Incredibly Stupid
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I'm not sure if this is meant to be a "Young Adult" novel, but I think even my 17-year-old niece would find it too stupid. It started off okay, but then quickly devolved into one cliche after another. I finally quit about halfway through. I really wanted to like it, but just couldn't hack it. The reader, Toby Leonard Moore, however, was excellent. Don't blame him!
Would you ever listen to anything by Simon R. Green again?
No
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Toby Leonard Moore?
Nobody.
What character would you cut from Ghost of A Smile?
All of them?
Any additional comments?
Just too cliche.
