In the Pacific Ocean a Silicon Valley magnate vacationing on his luxury motor yacht Carpe Diem stumbles across a floating island of pumice. Two weeks later, their motor yacht returns to its home port in San Diego on autopilot - but when it arrives, nobody gets off.

Sam Reilly and his team are called in to investigate what happened on board Carpe Diem. But what at first appears to be a simple boating accident soon turns into a deadly game of international intrigue - sending America and Russia racing toward each other on an unavoidable collision course.

My first adventure with Sam Reilly!

An interesting story to be sure. Although this is volume 15 in the Sam Reilly series, it is my first exposure. I was able to enjoy the book as a stand-alone novel even though there were instances of experiences in the past. This is a current day technology thriller revolving around high-end electronics, deep sea diving, the Marianas Trench, and the evils of nuclear waste. There’s also a bit of fantasy thrown in concerning the 8th Continent, which I also enjoyed. The characters were likable and I’m sure with reading previous volumes would provide plenty of backgrounds. I will not mind checking out other Sam Reilly volumes as I come across them. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Good, fast moving adventure story

First, a disclaimer, this is the first book in the series that I have listed to. Obviously, there was information and character development that I missed having not heard the first 14 novels. However, the call-backs were sufficient to not leave me lost in the mud. Reviewing this book as a standalone, the story had a good clip and the characters were fun. How this novel fits in to the greater 'universe' of Sam Reilly I will leave to others. I will say, having listened to this, I will go back and start picking up the early books and see more of this world.

Now, the obligatory, "I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review."

Slightly confused becuase I started with 15

These days I'm very guilty of reading books with no context, just to see if I'll discover something I'll like. I started with this book and got overly invested in the intro characters who disappear for a bit and don't come back into later in the book. I was a bit confused until the half way point and I think most of my confusion is not reading any of the prior books. Overall I really enjoyed the story but feel like I would have benefited from reading the others first. I was given this book in exchange for my honest review.

Awesome!

Habitat Zero, a Sam Reilly book is incredible. This series has been a favorite of mine. Christopher Cartwright has succeeded in creating a unique and endearing character in Sam Reilly. I love how he meshes history with today, legend with fantasy, action and adventure. The use of black obsidian references throughout the series adds an authentic element in his research of events and adds a plausible factor. The storyline is original and thought provoking. David Gilmore is perfect in his narration. He brings the characters to life, giving them distinguishable voices. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. I will most definitely listen to more books by this talented author and narrator.

The Adventure Continues

Habitat Zero: Sam Reilly, Book 15.. I am a fan of the entire series all of the books. This one is no exception. action packed and gripping with multiple story lines intertwining through out the book.I love the style and the technical detail and science with lay mans explanation of how it is rellevant, that goes into each book.
Yes the story is fiction but believable fiction, and hugely entertaining.
David Gilmore the narrator ( all the books ) does a superb job, so pleased his continuity throughout the series has added so much. I can't imagine anyone else as Sam & Tom.

Good read, futuristic and ancient combined!

This is a great book. An eighth continent, ancient creatures, futuristic orbs, this book has a bit of everything. Mr. Cartwright has a great imagination and sense of adventure! I was more than happy to go on this one with him! Sam was a very likable hero and easy to root for. The narrator, David Gilmore, was excellent, I plan on looking for more books he read. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in mysteries, suspense and thrillers!

A fun addition to an established series

This is a hard one to review without spoilers. The 8th continent setting is amazing (I could have listened to several books just about that!) and the mysteries and twists are fun. There are a lot of interesting informational bits about plants, animals, people and locations that add depth to the environments. The plot starts out with a handful of threads that come together in a satisfying way. I have not read the other books in this series before but I had no trouble jumping right into this book. Everything is explained in plenty of detail to make a neophyte feel right at home. However, the narrator’s speed is slow for me. I listened to this book at a higher speed and I thought it sounded fine. The narrator also has trouble pronouncing words correctly (epitome comes to mind). Definitely listen to the sample before deciding whether to listen to or read this one yourself. I received this audiobook from the author in exchange for an unbiased review.
