Opal is a gleaming shrine world of saints and soldiers, beloved of the Emperor Himself. Sent to retrieve the skull of the revered Saint Veres, Sister Superior Augusta of the Order of the Bloody Rose and her squad find themselves in the midst of the capital’s holiest festival, a time of reverence and celebration. But all is not well – despite what its planetary leaders would have Augusta believe, political danger bubbles under the surface, and rebel attacks gnaw away at the city’s outskirts. During the Cadian 217th’s assault on the manufactorum world of Attruso, Darya finds herself out of her depth in a war that is fought with words as much as with weapons. As a fearsome winter closes in and her men begin to die around her, she will be forced to confront her doubts and make an impossible choice – to become the figurehead her soldiers need, or to believe the unimaginable promises of the mysterious t’au.
With the fate of her regiment in her hands, which path will she choose?

Story
The United Nations of Earth sent out the Forerunner ships to explore and colonize the four most promising star systems within 50 light-years of Earth. Forerunner One left Earth under the command of Captain Clayton Cross, heading for Trappist-1. After a ninety year journey to reach it, the crew encountered not only a habitable world, but alien life already inhabiting it, and dark secrets lurking beneath the surface. The revelation of who these aliens are and what they want proves more terrifying than promising, and Captain Cross is forced to make tough decisions that will affect not only his crew, but the fate of the entire human race.

boring till 7 hours in
the narrator isn't monotone but has the same inflection for almost every sentence. This gives an impression very similar to a monotone narrator. The story is slow until the end when it gets very good and then just ends.

A good story!
A good sniper story. Just when I thought it was winding down it picked back up again. Sure made the work day go by faster

A very good quality story
A good sniper book with plenty of grass-root level characters from Imperium and Tau. Recommended!

Give this one a shot
This is an excellent book if you want a Sniper's story in the 41st Millenium, and an even BETTER book if you want to see a Guard vs. T'au story. Give this book a listen and you won't be disappointed, engaging plotline, good characters, all around a great read.

Great story
Bare bones and straight forward with a few nice twists to boot. Quite enjoyed it.

An interesting sniper story with decent commentary
The tactics of sniping are on full display here and are given in interesting detail. It's very interesting what they do narrative-wise with the story, especially near the end (though I think they could've done more with it). The Tau do kind of make significant blunders near the end that are head-scratching.
Unlike the lazy-brained anonymous reviewer who called the commentary "leftist" I think it shows how both sides of the conflict take advantage of marginalized groups for their own ends. No one is really in the right here. As is common in the setting of 40k.
The narrator was excellent but the thing I have to critique is that shouting by making yourself quieter doesn't really carry the same impact. I did like the voice effects added to simulate radio activity.

Fun exciting story reminiscent of Enemy at the Gates
I have not listened to a lot of Militarum stories, and this was a great one. Very personable, good character development. Lots of twists and turns. The narrator did a great job as well, telling the Sergeant’s point of view and how she thought. It was a great listen.
