Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money - the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.

The first type drain intelligence, energy, and capability from the people around them and always need to be the smartest people in the room. These are the idea killers, the energy sappers, the diminishers of talent and commitment. On the other side of the spectrum are leaders who use their intelligence to amplify the smarts and capabilities of the people around them.

Publisher's summary
Imagine you’re one of 75,000 people working in a huge company, and the CEO wants to talk to you, one-on-one, to get to know and understand you. That’s what Monty Moran did 20,000 times as he built the extraordinary culture that took Chipotle Mexican Grill from a regional burrito chain to a Fortune 500 superstar.
In Love Is Free, Guac Is Extra, Monty shows how he used curiosity, vulnerability, love, and a unique understanding of the true meaning of empowerment to build a distinctive and wildly effective culture. From his teenage days befriending homeless people at a Colorado Dairy Queen to his nuanced navigation of a complex co-CEO relationship, Monty demonstrates a relentless humility and desire to understand the person across from him.
This is not your average leadership book. This is a book about business leadership executed in a way you’ve never encountered before, by becoming the best version of yourself.

Story
They actually have vastly different styles and backgrounds. Yet despite their differences, great managers share one common trait: They don’t hesitate to break virtually every rule held sacred by conventional wisdom. They don’t believe that, with enough training, a person can achieve anything he sets his mind to. They don’t try to help people overcome their weaknesses. And, yes, they even play favorites. In this longtime management bestseller, Gallup presents the remarkable findings of its massive in-depth study of great managers.

We may think we have to keep these realities under wraps and act as if we “have it all together”. But as Mike Robbins explains, we can work better, lead better, and be more engaged and fulfilled if - instead of trying to hide who we are- we show up fully and authentically.

Spectacular insight into leadership/communication
Amazing to hear Monty's journey and what a gift to be able to pull leadership lessons from his stories. Slightly biased as I was a GM at Chipotle during Monty's tenure having heard him speak in Vegas; he was always engaging and the highlight of the agenda. Looking forward to sharing a recommendation for this book to colleagues and also reading it again.. and again.

Every leader must read this book
The last chapter titled “Next” was my favorite. How Wendy was helpful for the author to discover his next steps, I found encouragement and inspiration from his closing message. I’m certain that this message helped many others but it showed up to me in a perfect timing.

Engaging story of a great leader
Highly recommended reading for anyone interested in how to revolutionize corporate culture and become a great leader. It’s inspiring to hear about how the phenomenal growth of Chipotle was built on a revolutionary transformation of it’s corporate culture. Monty Moran’s narration makes Chipotle’s story come alive.

Great message, average delivery
This book delivers a great message with excellent advice for aspiring leaders from a lawyer turned CEO who is passionate about teaching others how to lead by truly caring about team members and listening intently to what they have to say. The writing and narration quality were only average though.
