The promise of this book is simple: if you buy this book on Friday, you will be better at your job by Monday.
MicroSkills is built on one core, easy-to-learn principle: every big goal, complicated task, healthy habit, and, yes, even what we think of as character traits, can be broken down into small, learnable, skills that can be practiced, and incorporated real-time. We call these: MicroSkills.
As award winning physicians, educators, and mentors we hear the gamut of challenges with navigating the workplace. And when we learn a lesson we often wish we had learned it earlier. MicroSkills is packed with the privileged information that you want delivered to you as efficiently as possible.
In MicroSkills you will learn
- How to build your career without breaking yourself
- How to manage your task list to get work done
- How to build and maintain your professional reputation
- How to become a subject matter expert
- How to grow and nurture your network
- How to become a better communicator
- and so much more...
MicroSkills is the gift we wish we had received early in our careers.

Our lives are filled with repetitive tasks meant to keep us on track—what we come to know as habits. Over time, these routines (for example, brushing your teeth or putting on your right sock first) tend to be performed automatically. But when we’re more mindful about these actions—when we focus on the precise way they are performed—they can instead become rituals. Shifting from a “habitual” mindset to a “ritual” mindset can convert ordinary acts from black and white to technicolor.

So what's the deal? Mindful listening is the skill behind deep relationships. This book is about a skill that isn't complex, but also not easy. It's a book about relationships and what drives them - what lets you into people's hearts.

Story
Life revolves around learning—in school, at our jobs, even in the things we do for fun. Yet learning is often mysterious. Sometimes it comes fairly effortlessly: quickly finding our way around a new neighborhood or picking up the routine at a new job. In other cases, it’s a slog. We may spend hours in the library, yet still not do well on an exam. We may want to switch companies, industries, or even professions, but not feel qualified to make the leap.

Story
The girlboss came in many forms, and she struggled valiantly against our increasing exhaustion at her brand of pinkwashed-capitalism-as-liberation—but it’s time to put her to rest. Yes, money is essential to life, and managing it well can be the difference between freedom and constraint. But once you have enough, the focus should be on converting it into things that are meaningful to you: more time with the people you love, more creativity, more days to just vibe on the couch.

Story
In an age of convenience and information overload, it’s easy to go through the motions, pressured, distracted, and seeking instant gratification rather than harnessing our potential for meaningful and impactful lives. When we’re accustomed to a low energy brain state and lulled by the comfort zone it creates, it’s difficult to rouse ourselves to act with intention and create the lives we truly want to lead.

Story
Anyone who has read Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air or has seen a recent photo of climbers standing in line to get to the top of Everest may think they have the mountain pretty well figured out. It’s an extreme landscape where bad weather and incredible altitude can occasionally kill, but more so an overcrowded, trashed-out recreation destination where rich clients pad their egos—and social media feeds—while exploiting local Sherpas. There’s some truth to these clichés, but they’re a sliver of the story.

Game changer
Out of the many business performance and personal improvement books out there, this is quite simply a standout!
MicroSkills is immediately actionable, filled with useful anecdotes, and real-life, relatable situations. I very much admire the tone that the authors (both bonified experts in their fields) take -- they're supportive and encouraging rather than preachy. It's rare to find a book that is so filled with digestible, well-outlined take-home points. It honestly lives up to its tagline (I can think of tangible ways I'll be better at my job tomorrow). As someone who prizes efficiency, this was well worth my time spent. The audiobook is very engaging, and I'll be recommending it to friends and colleagues for years to come. I wish I had this guide earlier in my career.
