Publisher's summary

In Obsession, John Douglas once again takes us fascinatingly behind the scenes, focusing his expertise on predatory crimes, primarily against women. With a deep sense of compassion for the victims and an uncanny understanding of the perpetrators, Douglas looks at the obsessions that lead to rape, stalking, and sexual murder through such cases as Ronnie Shelton, the serial rapist who terrorized Cleveland; and New York's notorious "Preppie Murder".

But Douglas also looks at obsession on the other side of the moral spectrum: his own career-long obsession with hunting these predators. Douglas shows us how we can all fight back and protect ourselves, our families, and loved ones against the scourge of the violent predators in our midst.

The first step is insight and understanding, and no one is better qualified to penetrate Obsession than John Douglas.

Amazing

I loved that this book not only discussed cases, but that it also spoke in great depth about victim advocacy, therapy and legal reform. Very insightful book!

Great read

Very interesting and informative book, highly recommend for anyone interested in true crime. How he compares different predators and explains how these predators can be spotted

I'm obsessed

I have an obsession. John E Douglass and other profilers books. this is no exception. Narrator did an excellent job and I love how the author breaks down the mystery and shows these characters for the pathetic losers they are. I really appreciated how this book gives the victims a story as well. Its not a book about the rapists and killers but about how what they take from the world and how pointless it was.

Another great one.

Always love anything John Douglas writes. 👏🏼 On to the next one.
My fav chapter was the Buffalo Bill and Beyond chapter.

The narrator is a bit rough

Mindhunter is definitely the best of this series, and this one rehashes some info from that, but also focuses on stalking and other crimes against women, which is all great information ... But Danny Campbell sounds like a grandpa who is continually surprised by what he's reading.
That's his only expression of emotion: the vocal sound of a vague unpleasant surprise. Imagine giving an old guy with dementia a really horrible news story to read out loud. He doesn't remember why he's reading this or the sentences before the one he's reciting, but he's mildly outraged by having to read it.

It's weird. I don't think I can listen to Heart of Darkness until they find a new narrator, lol. Good info, though, like I said.

Enlightening

Fascinating & educational! Enjoyed the psychology & science of the book. Remarkable that these guys put the time in to figure out the profiles & how accurate they are!

Why is Danny Campbell yelling at me?

I love John Douglas books, and this one is no different. He's not perfect, but I love his insight. He breaks down aberrant behavior into digestible pieces so you can understand the twisted logic behind them. You can even see shades of it in the people around you, with how they respond to different situations in their lives. I feel like it helps me understand people in general, even ones who aren't necessarily violent. The thing I'm having trouble with here is that I feel like the narrator, Danny Campbell, is too aggressive in his reading. His staccato, high-volume style feels accusatory, and while I'm sure John Douglas would posit this says more about me than about him, I'm just saying that I'd prefer a little more finesse. Love the book though!

💯 required reading- be smart and live

Interesting true crime with value added on who and what type of people and behaviors to be aware of. Narration gets a ‘c’ - its sometimes monotone with odd emphasis
