Publisher's summary
Take control of your money - and your life - now.
Forget everything you've ever learned about money: this is not your ordinary finance book. Financial journalist Nicole Lapin knows money and has rewritten the rules with this refreshing and accessible guide to understanding money basics written especially for you.
Should you buy or lease a car? Should you buy a home or rent? How much do you need to save, and how should you save it? What should you do about your debt? How much should you be spending? What kind of insurance do you need? These are all important questions. But first you need to ask yourself how you want to live and how you will get there.
There are some hard-and-fast rules about finance, sure, but when it comes to your money, the only person who can tell you how to spend it is you. With her 12-step, 12-month program, Lapin will show you how to create a tailored plan for your finances that makes sense for your income, debt, spending habits, and plans for the future. Along the way, she busts the old money myths that haven't gotten us anywhere and teaches you the ABCs of finance, from assets to zero down and everything in between, all in a language you can understand.
The sooner you can speak the language of money, the sooner you can live the life you want. Lapin guides you step by step, first showing you how to make a list of goals, then devising a plan to make sure you achieve them - debt free, worry free, and in control. It's time to stop fearing finances and let Rich Bitch help you face the facts. You're not alone in this anymore!

Story
Why do we lose money? It's easy to blame the economy or the financial markets - but the real trouble lies in the decisions we make. As a financial planner, Carl Richards grew frustrated watching people he cared about make the same mistakes over and over. They were letting emotion get in the way of smart financial decisions. He named this phenomenon - the distance between what we should do and what we actually do - "the behavior gap". He found that once people understood it, they started doing much better.

Recent statistics suggest that nearly two-thirds of Americans regret not planning properly for retirement. We tend to underestimate the key factors of retirement planning: our total lifespan; the probable length of our retirement; and, perhaps most significant, how much money we’ll need to fund those years in retirement. In fact, retirement planning can feel so overwhelming that many of us put off thinking about it at all until it’s too late to make the necessary changes.

It’s time for women to become more empowered to invest than ever before. No matter what business a woman is in, it’s key that she is not just entrepreneurial minded but investment minded. Most women are one paycheck or one man away from being bankrupt or homeless. Even those with businesses pour their earnings back into the business, and, in the end, never truly see long-term wealth. It’s time for that to change.
