Publisher's summary

Ryder Creed and his K9 search-and-rescue dogs return in the second installment of an exciting new series, teaming up once more with FBI profiler Maggie O'Dell in their riskiest case yet. When Ryder Creed responds to a devastating mudslide in North Carolina, he knows that the difference between finding survivors and the dead is time. He and his sturdiest search-and-rescue dog, Bolo, get to work immediately, but the scene is rife with danger: Continued rainfall prevents the rescue teams from stabilizing the land; toxic household substances spread by the crushing slide fill the area with hazardous waste; and the detritus and debris are treacherous for both man and dog to navigate.

But most perilous are the secrets hidden under the mud and sludge - secrets someone would kill to protect. For this is no ordinary rescue mission. Among the buildings consumed by the landslide was a top-secret government research facility, and Creed has been hired to find what's left of it. Then rescuers recover the body of a scientist from the facility who was obviously dead before the landslide - killed by a gunshot to the head. The FBI sends Agent Maggie O'Dell to investigate, and she and Creed are soon caught in a web of lies, secrets, and murder that may involve not only the government facility but decades-old medical experiments that are the subject of current congressional hearings. As more bodies are found under even more unusual circumstances, they come ever closer to exposing the truth - but with unknown forces working against them, Maggie, Creed, and the dogs are running out of time.

Awesome!!

I always seek out Alex Kava's books. I love this new series which centers around rescue & retrieval teams. Creed is complex and quite memorable hero that I will eagerly await new books surrounding him and his team of dogs!!!

Even better than the last Ryder creed!

Alex's second best book yet! (Only to my first read & all time favorite, Exposed). If these same characters as Benjamin Platt and Ryder Creed had been incorporated into the Maggie O'Dell series earlier, it would've improved the series 150%. The only things I'd like to see differently in he future/aspects that could've improved this novel is a bit of romance incorporated (other then how Alex had Maggie emotionally stuck between both men to a certain degree, yet will only have about 5 minutes' reading be about what they say to eachother to acknowledge it or do physically rather than all this tip-toeing around everything.). The only other improvement is another general characteristic seen in all her novels, which is too abrupt of an ending without any sense of resolution. Other than that, I really enjoyed this book and wouldn't hesitate suggesting it to anyone- especially to those who've enjoyed this series in the past or who are huge dog fans and fascinated at their helpful capabilities like I am.

Ending - TBC?

Ending was a little disappointing but it probably leads to another story. First book was even better.

On the edge of my seat

The first book had a lot of twists and turns and there’s a lot going on the second book is the same way both books tie up quite a bit but keep used to spend and the story continues. Can’t wait to listen to the next book the dogs in the story are wonderful, the people are pretty good to

Pretty good

I enjoyed this book. I love the dogs, and the search and rescue information was very interesting. It felt a bit slow and disjointed in a few spots, but overall, it was good.
