Editorial reviews

Whether you’re looking to save up enough money to put down a deposit on a house or find a financial adviser who’s actually trustworthy, it’s safe to say that achieving financial objectives can feel like an insurmountable challenge. But with the guidance of Scott Pape, The Barefoot Investor himself, your most ambitious money goals can become a reality.

This guide isn’t filled with unachievable budget demands or plans that are impossible to actually put into action. Rather, Pape distils his most pragmatic money advice into five easy-to-follow steps. Aussies can rest assured that they have the most up-to-date information on who to call, where to invest and what to say to achieve financial freedom once and for all. As he’s known for his work on radio and television, it’s no surprise that Pape is a masterful storyteller and narrator — his rich, warm voice brings to life stories from real life Australians, demonstrating the changes in money habits needed to grow and sustain wealth.

Publisher's summary

Fully revised and updated for the 2020-2021 financial year

This is the only money guide you'll ever need.

That's a bold claim, given there are already thousands of finance books on the shelves.

So what makes this one different?

Well, you won't be overwhelmed with a bunch of "tips" or a strict budget (that you won't follow).

You'll get a step-by-step formula: open this account, then do this; call this person, and say this; invest money here and not there. All with a glass of wine in your hand.

This book will show you how to create an entire financial plan that is so simple you can sketch it on the back of a serviette...and you'll be able to manage your money in 10 minutes a week.

You'll also get the skinny on:

  • Saving up a six-figure house deposit in 20 months
  • Doubling your income using the Trapeze Strategy
  • Saving $78,173 on your mortgage and wiping out seven years of payments
  • Finding a financial advisor who won't rip you off
  • Handing your kids (or grandkids) $140,000 checks on their 21st birthdays
  • Why you don't need $1 million to retire...with the Donald Bradman Retirement Strategy

Sound too good to be true? It's not.

This book is full of stories from everyday Aussies—single people, young families, empty nesters, retirees—who have applied the simple steps in this book and achieved amazing, life-changing results.

And you're next.

overall very inspirational

I liked the book, it has some of the very important statistics and advice, although first half was much more interesting.
Narration was done good, personally I don't like that much emotion in an audiobook but that's subjective.
I definitely recommend this book to people that want to learn to manage their finances, especially in Australia. If you are from some second or third world country this rules do not apply so just skip this book.

Inspiring and informative. A must read.

The barefoot investor is like a conversation with a rich relative who happily shares the steps they took to financial security. It's simple, conversational and effective. Unlike other wealth management books, Barefoot doesn't waffle on with theory, it provides the actual steps you can take to gain control of your money so it grows and grows... kind of like planting a money tree :)

Geared to Australia

Heavily geared towards the Australian super but still has some worthwhile information for anywhere else.

I’m sure it would have been better if I was Australian

The overall book was great but this book deals with mostly financial advice from Australia. A lot of the concepts do not cross to other countries.

Good guide but only relevant to Australia

Good tips. Nothing new if you are a bit into the subject.
It's relevant only to Australia.
I like the last chapter the best, It's very honest and emotional.

Yank learning about Aussies

If you’ve read Dave Ramsey you’ve heard most of this, biggest difference is the loopholes for Aussies and their ways around the system. Interesting ideas instead of the cash envelopes you have cards and accounts, etc. Not a bad listen, he keeps it entertaining, but wouldn’t be my first choice for someone in America trying to get on the best financial track.

not your standard financial book

This was a great listen. Scott's advice was practical but not imperial. The common language and humor weaved into it made it a lighter listen then I expected. The attached PDF is great and I started to explore the website. Only down fall is it revolves around the Australian market so it was not directly applicable for the US market. That said a little homework makes his advice work.
