Publisher's summary

In The Fiat Standard, world-renowned economist Saifedean Ammous applies his unique analytical lens to the fiat monetary system, explaining it as a feat of engineering and technology just as he did for bitcoin in his global best seller The Bitcoin Standard.

This time, Ammous delves into the world's earlier shift from the gold standard to today's system of government-backed fiat money—outlining the fiat standard's purposes and failures; deriving the wider economic, political, and social implications of its use; and examining how bitcoin will affect it over time.

With penetrating insight, Ammous analyzes global political currencies by analogy to bitcoin: how they're "mined" whenever government-guaranteed entities create loans, their lack of inherent restraints on inflation, and the rampant government intervention that has resulted in heavy, devastating, and persistent distortions to global markets for food, fuel, science, and education.

Through these comparisons, Ammous demonstrates that bitcoin could be our next step forward—providing high salability across space, just like the fiat system, but without the unchecked fiat-denominated debt. Rather than a messy hyperinflationary collapse, the rise of bitcoin could look like a debt jubilee and an orderly upgrade to the world's monetary operating system, revolutionizing global capital and energy markets.

Great Information

Great information about how fiat is used to control populations, and why alternatives such as a bitcoin standard can help solve this problem 👍🏾

Amazing book, mandatory for all, but two narrators was jarring

Amazing book, mandatory for all, but two narrators was jarring. No offense to Saifedean but I personally preferred the other narrator who spoke a little slower and clear. On the other hand, I was also distracted by the unusual accents the other narrator used whenever he quoted historical figures. Those issues set aside, this book is utterly exemplary in its message regarding the catastrophe that is the fiat monetary system. Hopefully, a few centuries from now, history books will refer to the period between the 1900s and early 2000s as The Fiat Crisis, and they will have been flourishing on a Bitcoin standard for generations.

Thoughtful and well done

Brace yourself. This book will ask you to pay attention as it digs deep into things in your world that you may have accepted as fixed and immutable. I had to periodically rewind a few minutes' worth as I said, "Wait...what??". A few minutes later this was typically followed by,, "Oh... damn.." Well worth the read!

Incredible Thought Provoking

Simply out this is a great book. Very simple, easy to listen to and gets the ideas across for almost anyone regardless of his level of academia. Personally I believe it is one of the best books I have read & listened to after “The Bitcoin Standard”

Homeschool Families - this is a must for you and kids

I gave both books to my 81-year-old mother. Who very quickly felt so empowered to finally understand how money works. My teenager who overheard us studying the books together, was fascinated and asked if I could buy them books. This is a first ever my teenager loves to read but teenager books. Never a personal development / economics of money book.

Economics is some thing we are often teaching our children and homeschool. I out school more than home school…

So learning about bitcoin (and crypto) has been part of our conversations for several years. This is the first time I felt like I could understand money, our economy, inflation, and how bitcoin connects at all and why the rest of Crypto is crap.

I read another review about the authors incorrect opinions. Maybe Saife (pronounced Safe)… has his own opinions about climate change, the corrupt medical system, why beef is better than box food and toxic plants, etc.

He’s using his own perspectives to tie it to the fiat money system.

No matter what our perspective, the fiat money system works the same.

We can have a variety of opinions, and the fiat money system is impacting all of us in a very negative Way.

You and your kids and all your loved ones deserve to know the true functions of fiat currency. Find me on social - Satoshi tutor (satoshi is the smallest unit of a Bitcoin)

In depth view of money.

Captivating. Important read even if you don’t care about Bitcoin or cryptocurrency. Would consider this generations sequel to Niall Ferguson’s The Ascent of Money.

It's brilliantly not about either bitcoin or fiat!

as with the book's prequel, the bitcoin standard, the title is brilliantly misleading; reading both books in tandem is recommended, the takeout wouldn't necessarily be buying/hording bitcoin, but a paradigm shifting fresh understanding of how the world around us is manipulated, it's effects on us and recommendations on what to do about it.

Glue on the puzzle!

This is a great book. It neatly tied together so many pieces of fiat puzzle.
