She feels the pull of the abandoned grave, calling her back to the clearing. Iris and Daniel start to research the area for a school project. Publisher's summary
Celeste knows she should be excited to spend two weeks at her grandparents' lake house with her brother, Owen, and their cousins Capri and Daisy, but she's not.
Bugs, bad cell reception, and the dark waters of the lake...no thanks. On top of that, she just failed her swim test and hates being in the water - it's terrifying. But her grandparents are strong believers in their family knowing how to swim, especially having grown up during a time of segregation at public pools. Without the opportunity to learn, Grandma's sister drowned when they were kids.
But soon strange things start happening, like Celeste's cousins accusing her of waking them up in the middle of the night. But Celeste hasn't been awake during the night - she knows she's been fast asleep because she's been having terrible nightmares about drowning!
Things at the old house only get spookier until one evening when Celeste looks in the steamy mirror after a shower and sees her face, but twisted, different....
Who is the girl in the mirror? And what does she want?
Past and present mingle in this spine-tingling ghost story by India Hill Brown.

Story
Eleven minutes passed before Delaney Maxwell was pulled from the icy waters of a Maine lake by her best friend, Decker Phillips. By then her heart had stopped beating. Her brain had stopped working. She was dead. And yet she somehow defied medical precedent to come back seemingly fine - despite the scans that showed significant brain damage. Everyone wants Delaney to be all right, but she knows she's far from normal. Pulled by strange sensations she can't control or explain, Delaney finds herself drawn to the dying. Is her altered brain now predicting death, or causing it?

In her case, that means she can't stand to be touched, loud noises bother her, she's easily distracted, she hates changes in her routine, and she has to go see a therapist while other kids get to hang out at the beach. It also means Frankie has trouble making friends. She did have one - Colette - but they're not friends anymore. It's complicated. It’s a story of a country mouse and a city mouse: 14-year-old Polly Milton travels to Boston for a stay with her friend Fanny Shaw. The wealthy Shaws’ way of life is foreign to Polly who tries to adapt but is quickly labeled “old-fashioned”. Amazing story
This was the perfect amount of scary. I loved how the reader read the book. I give the overall rating four stars because I had a feeling Great Aunt Ellie was trying to harm the family. Other than that, the story was amazing and everything made sense in the end. It had a great message, and I loved how Celeste, Owen, Daisy, and Capri worked together to solve the mysteries of the lake house.

Just the Right Amount of Spooky!
I listened to the audiobook of The Girl in the Lake and I enjoyed it so much! The narrator was fantastic. Some scenes were incredibly creepy and made me break out in actual goosebumps. I'm sure kids will love this spooky story, too. I also appreciated how the author weaved actual history into the plot about how racism and segregation prevented Black families from learning how to swim and the impact of that over generations.
