One heroic act damned me for eternity. With a name like Tor, I should have been a hero, just like my father and twin. Turns out I’m not. Not even close. Instead I’m the very thing we hunted. A depraved monster. I thought there was no escaping the curse. No hope for a future. And then I met my mate in the unlikeliest of places: Blackwood Asylum. A place for criminals. Power-hungry madmen. Supernatural outcasts. And her, the curvaceous writer who sees ghosts.

Publisher's summary
In the second installment of New York Times bestselling author Hannah Whitten’s lush romantic epic fantasy series, the glittering and dangerous world of the Sainted King’s royal court is upended when Prince Bastian seizes control and a mysterious dark force begins to take over.
The corrupt king August is dead. Prince Bastian has seized the throne and raised Lore—a necromancer and former smuggler—to his right-hand side. Together they plan to cut out the rot from the heart of the royal court and help the people of Dellaire. But not everyone is happy with the changes. The nobles are sowing dissent, the Kirythean Empire is beating down their door, and Lore’s old allies are pulling away. Even Prince Bastian has changed. No longer the hopeful, rakish, charismatic man Lore knows and loves, instead he’s become reckless, domineering, and cold.
And something has been whispering in her ear. A voice, dark and haunting, that’s telling her there’s more to the story than she knows and more to her power than she can even imagine. A truth buried deep that could change everything.
With Bastian’s coronation fast approaching and enemies whispering on all sides, Lore must figure out how to protect herself, her prince, and her country before they all come crumbling down and whatever dark power has been creeping through the catacombs is unleashed.
Critic reviews
"Hannah Whitten is a world-building powerhouse! The Sainted King's court feels like a glittering chandelier—bright and brilliant to behold, with faceted edges sharp enough to kill. I was dazzled."—Erin A. Craig, #1 New York Times bestselling author of House of Roots and Ruin

The Feral King thinks he'll break me. But I will break him first. I’m a 400-year-old witch covered in tattoos—the source of my magic—but I’ve been hiding them for years, trying to escape my past. After spending centuries at the mercy of royals who thirst only for power and the desire to make up for their less impressive "assets," I refuse to be used as a tool for evil ever again. It's any other night in my apothecary when the Feral King—a beast who eats the local villagers for sport—kidnaps me and demands my help.

Daughter of a conquered world, Ruying hates the invaders who descended from the heavens long before she was born and defeated the magic of her people with technologies unlike anything her world had ever seen. Blessed by Death, born with the ability to pull the life right out of mortal bodies, Ruying shouldn’t have to fear these foreign invaders, but she does. Especially because she wants to keep herself and her family safe. When Ruying’s Gift is discovered by an enemy prince, he offers her an impossible deal.

Story
The Feral King thinks he'll break me. But I will break him first. I’m a 400-year-old witch covered in tattoos—the source of my magic—but I’ve been hiding them for years, trying to escape my past. After spending centuries at the mercy of royals who thirst only for power and the desire to make up for their less impressive "assets," I refuse to be used as a tool for evil ever again. It's any other night in my apothecary when the Feral King—a beast who eats the local villagers for sport—kidnaps me and demands my help.

In love with this series
The storyline never lulls and keeps at a steady pace. I really hope there is a 3rd book. I need there to be a 3rd book. The Hemlock Queen is a seamless continuation of the first book in the series so if you enjoyed that one, you'll like this one even more.

Amazing World, Needs Better Pacing
3.5/5 ⭐
1.0/5 🌶️
4.0/5 🎧
I feel like I can copy and paste my review from book one... While the world is amazing and the characters are fantastic, the pacing leaves so much to be desired. I was hoping that not needing to build the world in book two would lead to a faster paced story, but alas, it was still about 30% too long in my opinion.
Will I be tuning in for book three? Most likely. I am really interested to see how this story ends and the cliffhanger for Queen was quite brutal.
Audio was really good, but slow. I sped it up about 0.75x more than I usually listen. Emily Ellet had really great female voices, but her males could be hard to distinguish. Overall I did enjoyed the listen.
