Publisher's summary

After hijacking a balloon from a Confederate camp, a band of five northern prisoners escape the American Civil War. Seven thousand miles later, they drop from the clouds onto an uncharted volcanic island in the Pacific. Through teamwork, scientific knowledge, engineering, and perseverance, they endeavor to build a colony from scratch. But this island of abundant resources has its secrets. The castaways discover they are not alone. A shadowy, yet familiar, agent of their unfathomable fate is watching.

What unfolds in Jules Verne’s imaginative marvel is both an enthralling mystery and the ultimate in survivalist adventures.

Verne’s Redemption

Fantastic edition of Jules Verne’s classic. This version of the read-aloud adds shine to the ageless diamond. Don’t get shortchanged by other, condensed versions. Giant 5 stars across the board!

The Mysterious Island is my favorite story! Verne neatly tied several loose ends and avoided many of his typical cringe-worthy judgments.

Imaginative Delight

A true "page turner." Adventure storytelling at it's best. Was sad that it had to end

Sequel to 20,000 leagues under the sea

The narrator was very good, he was engaging and made each character stand out. This book would be perfect for a 10-12 year old. I enjoyed the science and engineering aspect which reminded me of Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. The book was published in 1870, so expect some typical attitudes on social class and race, but Verne’s main characters are very likable. The last third of the book is worth the buildup.

Excellent story & performance

The first time I’ve read the actual book vs. the movie. So much different and I think it is Verne’s best. I sampled several readers before settling on this one. James Langton was the best and we thoroughly enjoyed his narration. Highly recommend this version of The Mysterious Island.

Abridged translation

i liked it, but I have heard other translations are better. One of the main characters had his name changed in this one

classic necessity

once again a scientific adventure for Jules Verne. Written with rich words and language we don't hear as much in today's fast pace. There is a lot of sciene mixed in but it give you many of those "really" moments of thought. well worth the listen.

Mysterious Island

I think this is one on my favorite Jules Verne books. It’s full of adventure, twists and turns. The narrator was superb! I wish I could have given more than 5 stars.

This was a well executed classic!

The book held my attention from the beginning to the end. Highly intelligent, adventurous, an all around excellent story.
The gentleman that narrated it is top notch as far as I'm concerned ... good meter, tone, inflection, and at an excellent pace!
