The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Story
Once upon a time, in the magical land of San Francisco, there lived a not-so-ordinary girl named Laurel Pettigrew. She was supposed to be the Chosen One. The plan was simple: She would vanquish the great evil Tybus in an epic battle. But destiny had other ideas, and Laurel's performance in the whole heroics department was a colossal flop. Now, instead of being a legendary hero, Laurel's the resident pariah of the magic realm. And what’s worse, the dark wizard Tybus swooped in, took over the realm, and forced all supernatural creatures to live under his tyrannical rule.

Publisher's summary
Action! Humor! Fantasy! "Kicking off a new series with a bang (several bangs, in fact), Stroud sends two young fugitives with murky pasts fleeing murderous pursuers across a fractured future Britain." - Kirkus Reviews, starred
**Soon to be a motion picture starring Phoebe Dynevor of Bridgerton!**
Scarlett McCain is a shoot-first ask-questions-later kind of outlaw. She scrapes by on bank heists, her wits - and never looking back.
She’s on the run from her latest crime when she comes across Albert Browne. He is the sole survivor of a horrific accident, and against her better judgement, Scarlett agrees to guide him to safety.
This is a mistake. Soon there are men with dogs and guns and explosives hot on their heels. Scarlett’s used to being chased by the law, but this is extreme. It was only a little bank she’d robbed....
As they flee together across the wilds, fighting off monstrous beasts, and dodging their pursuers, Scarlett comes to realize that Albert Browne is hiding a terrible secret. And that he may be the most dangerous threat of all.
In this fast-paced, quick-witted whirlwind of a story, Jonathan Stroud introduces two unlikely allies - the outlaws Scarlett and Browne - who are about to become the most notorious renegades in all that’s left of Britain.
Critic reviews
"The vivid setting, rapid-fire dialogue, and nonstop action will propel readers through this raucous, rousing rumble. A blast for action fans, with potential for a long run." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)
"Just the kind of setting where adventure fantasy thrives. Add razor-sharp banter and you can lay the smart money on another Stroud winner." (Bulletin, starred review)
"Stroud expertly builds flawed characters, cahoots close and tender, and a fully realized setting in this rollicking series opener, employing arch phrasing, witty rapport, and quick pacing alongside the brutally rendered truths of a world intent on controlling outlaws of every type." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

Story
In the beginning, the gods destroyed the world. Five hundred years later, things haven’t gotten much better for humans. The demigods that were left behind to guard over humanity have been using them as fodder for an endless civil war between themselves, and the humans just go on dutifully slaughtering each other, battle after battle. It’s not all bad, though. Perry McGown makes his living off those bloody, stinking battlefields. He works on a crew that reclaims all the spent shell casings. But if anyone found out that he was a deserter from the war, he’d be executed for heresy.

You define life or it defines you. In Shawn Speakman’s case, it was both. Lacking health insurance and diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2011, Shawn quickly accrued a massive medical debt that he did not have the ability to pay. That’s when New York Times best-selling author Terry Brooks offered to donate a short story that Shawn could sell to help alleviate those bills—and suggested he ask the same of his other writer friends. Unfettered is the result: An anthology built in order to relieve that debt, featuring short stories by some of the best fantasy writers in the genre.

But when she goes to the library to return it, she's told that the book never belonged there. Curious, she starts to read the stories: tales of strange incidents in nearby towns, of journal entries chronicling endless, twisting pumpkin vines, birthday parties gone awry, and cursed tarot decks. Widge has no choice but to follow orders, so he works his way into the heart of the Globe Theatre, where Shakespeare's players perform. Meh
I really enjoyed Stroud’s other series so was looking forward to a fun read here. I liked the creativity of this one but found it way too predictable - in the individual events and in the broader story. The predictability was annoying, but it was still entertaining enough to finish the listen. For the most part, I liked the narrator. However, I could do without her voice for Albert. It increasingly irritated me as the story wore on.

Great Storyline, Characters, Narrator
Great Storyline & Characters. The female narrator does a great job keeping the characters separated with different accents

Solid
A good story with new characters. I purchased and listened because my family enjoyed the Lockwood and Co books. Mr. Stroud creates a new world here that is entertaining, but we didn't like it as much as the creative world in Lockwood. The characters are fun and the performance was great. The story is fast-paced with a strong female lead.

Not quite as joyous or intriguing as Bartimaeus or Lockwood but decent story with potential
Stroud is a genius storyteller. Everyone should give this book a chance. But the characters weren’t quite as gripping or charming or entertaining as I have come to expect. It would be hard to create someone to equal Bartimaeus- or the Skull- AND to envision yet another alternate Universe. I will be reading (listening to) all of what Jonathan Stroud releases. Sophie Aldred is a gifted reader. There ought to be a few more in this series as Scarlett and Brown solve their world’s problems. Look forward to it.

Excellent fun story
If you want a bank robber with questionable morals and the idealistic boy whose been a prisoner for most his life that drives her batty then this is the book for you, travel with scarlet and Albert as they travel across a post apocalyptic England and all the horrors that lie in wait there. This book has charming characters, nonstop action and enough belly laughs to keep it light. 10/10

Bloody brilliant
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a user of sarcasm myself, Scarlet speaks to my soul.

Fun story with lots of character!
The story was a fun little ride with pretty well thought out characters. I enjoyed it just as I have many other stories by Jonathan Stroud. Really my only complaint, and this was for the narrator in Lockwood and Co. as well, was her voicing of Albert. I think I would have liked his character even more and felt like he had a little more brains if she hasn't made him sound like a bumbling neanderthal. Please stop doing boys voices like this, it's hard to listen to.
