Publisher's summary

"A gritty, heart-pounding tale of betrayal and bloody vengeance. I loved every single word." (John Gwynne)

The Pariah begins a new epic-fantasy series of action, intrigue, and magic from Anthony Ryan, a master storyteller who has taken the fantasy world by storm.

Born into the troubled kingdom of Albermaine, Alwyn Scribe is raised as an outlaw. Quick of wit and deft with a blade, Alwyn is content with the freedom of the woods and the comradeship of his fellow thieves. But an act of betrayal sets him on a new path - one of blood and vengeance, which eventually leads him to a soldier's life in the king's army.

Fighting under the command of Lady Evadine Courlain, a noblewoman beset by visions of a demonic apocalypse, Alwyn must survive war and the deadly intrigues of the nobility if he hopes to claim his vengeance. But as dark forces, both human and arcane, gather to oppose Evadine's rise, Alwyn faces a choice: Can he be a warrior, or will he always be an outlaw?

"This makes a rich treat for George R.R. Martin fans." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

If you like Anthony Ryan books then buckle up because this is another great tale from the author.
I enjoyed the characters and the descriptions paint a wonderful picture of the story.
I’m excited for book 2!

I almost skipped this book due to other reviews. However, for fans of This author YOU will find the familiar style of Ryan addictive & will find yourself fully submerge into a world he has masterfully crafted.

Enjoyed this convoluted beginning

As a fan of other Anthony Ryan series I was happy to see a new offering. I was slow in warming up to the main characters but enjoyed the mix of “good and bad” that marks well rounded players in any tale. Also, I love listening to Steven Brand which enriched the experience. By the last, I was disappointed to hear the story ending and hope there will be a sequel in the not too distant future.

Another grat adventure

Well penned and immersive. I have listened to and read so many stories that I am rarely surprised by the twits and turns which wined the course of tale and its characters, but this story has many pleasant surprises while delivering a steadily engrossing tale.

A good Medieval fantasy, with a great narrator

This story has a good mix of fantasy/historical elements, but as with many stories, it is carried by the protagonist.

It’s not a perfect story, but it is good fun for your dollar.

My biggest criticism is that the author was scared of his own protagonist, in that way that so many authors are. Petrified of having a “morally grey” character do something morally dubious. The author starts out strong, but quickly loses faith in the protagonists ability to hold the audience if he does something “bad”.

That said, the story is still fun, and still worth the read.
