When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

The Earl of Wrexford possesses a brilliant scientific mind, but boredom and pride lead him to reckless behavior. He does not suffer fools gladly. So when pompous, pious Reverend Josiah Holworthy publicly condemns him for debauchery, Wrexford unsheathes his rapier-sharp wit and strikes back. As their war of words escalates, London's most popular satirical cartoonist, A. J. Quill, skewers them both.

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. Publisher's summary
Death, deception, and a detective with quite a lot to hide stalk Anthony Horowitz's brilliant murder mystery, the second in the best-selling series starring Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne.
“You shouldn’t be here. It’s too late....”
These, heard over the phone, were the last recorded words of successful celebrity-divorce lawyer Richard Pryce, found bludgeoned to death in his bachelor pad with a bottle of wine - a 1982 Chateau Lafite worth £3,000, to be precise.
Odd, considering he didn’t drink. Why this bottle? And why those words? And why was a three-digit number painted on the wall by the killer? And, most importantly, which of the man’s many, many enemies did the deed?
Baffled, the police are forced to bring in Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne and his sidekick, the author Anthony, who’s really getting rather good at this murder investigation business.
But as Hawthorne takes on the case with characteristic relish, it becomes clear that he, too, has secrets to hide. As our reluctant narrator becomes ever more embroiled in the case, he realizes that these secrets must be exposed - even at the risk of death....

When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

I’m hooked eternally on Horowitz
No spoilers. This book 2 in the series is once again extra creative in the the author places himself within the story. I love the premise and it was executed with accuracy and aplomb. This my 4th book by Horowitz, and at some point I will read them all. Since there are a finite number of his works, I’ll be taking my time! Thank you Mr Horowitz for allowing a serial bibliophile an opportunity to still get stumped. Narration was brilliant! Read this book after the 1st.

Fantastic story and storytelling. I especially enjoy the created relationship between the author and Hawthorne. On several occasions, I’ve looked up names and circumstances to see what I’d fictitious and what could be real. The excellent reading brings it all to life.

A+
Anthony Horowitz is my new favorite author since I read his novel Magpie Murders. I absolutely love all of his books and The Sentence is Death is no exception! His talent for writing great twists and solid characters is showcased in this book and I am amused to no end at the way in which he writes himself as a character. I sincerely hope there's another in the series!
