Publisher's summary
"Darkness is thicker than blood."
The Day Star hangs high above the realm, shining down a violet light upon all the land day and night. Those born under it, when the star shines at its brightest, are cursed with an affliction known as the Shadow Sight.
It calls to them from the reaches of the cosmos.
It speaks to them.
It watches them.
It allows them to perceive the unfathomable creatures of the Void.
In the city of Emberwatch, a group of people have gathered, all brought together by their own past traumas and their shared affliction of the Shadow Sight, to stop these creatures. The Order of the Blood has tasked themselves with protecting the citizens of the great "City of the Eternal Flame."
But who will protect them from what hides the darkness?
And who will protect them from themselves?

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

In 2059, two vastly different groups of people portrayed by the compelling trio of Brendan Fraser (Academy Award winner), Luke Kirby (Emmy Award winner), and Vanessa Sears (Dora Award winner) undergo cryonic suspension. While their bodies are frozen, their minds, still active and awake, are uploaded into a massive quantum computer. The first group are all astronauts, about to leave Earth on a one-way interstellar colonization mission. Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

The number one rule in life: never make a deal with Death…even if Death is your sister. Theodra, Goddess of War, knows not to break this rule. But like all arrogant gods, she does just that. Unable to hold back, she destroys a ship full of traffickers, unaware there are girls on board. When one of them dies, Theo trades with Death for a soul she will someday love. A soul for a soul. A good deal, in her esteemed opinion, since she is incapable of falling in love.

Story
I lived my life surrounded by luxuries, love, and attention. While at the mercy of lies, death, and deceit. I was tired of being just a pretty face. The woman who always had to prove her worth. When tragedy tears yet another gash in my heart, he was there to help mend my grief. But there was a mystery hidden behind those alluring diamond eyes. A whisper of ghosts and trauma from his past. Red flags I knew I shouldn’t ignore. Yet I couldn’t help the feelings blossoming within me or the fire that scorched my skin under his touch.

Sergeant Harry Kabutt has seen better days. He's been shot down, blown up, and tossed to the wayside by the corporations, left to rot in a ratty apartment in gang territory. His own limbs? Shredded, cut away, and left to rot on a mountainside. The replacement mods? Likely to fall apart or leave him to die of sepsis. No longer an operator of the feared APS mecha, Kabutt has hit rock bottom. But he's on foot, he's armed, and he's in serious pain…now it's time to take that pain and spread it around the mega-city of Artem. See who flinches first.

There is a curse on his blood, an ailment that, if revealed, could destroy his kingdom. The only one who can help him is me, a human with average healing abilities. It's what the Envoy told him, and her word is law. I'm his only hope. He sends his blue-blooded friends to kidnap me so I can join their quest to Mount Ruin, the only place where I can heal him. The path is terrifying, and the prince is lying, hiding things from me. To make matters worse, he isn't always nice. Solid performance salvaged a hard-to-like story
I wanted to like this book, but found I struggled to wrap my head around the world, connect with the characters, or understand their motivations. Despite all the action, I didn't feel like the plot had any direction until literally the last few sentences of the Epilogue. Despite these weaknesses, I found the performance enjoyable enough to keep me going when I likely would have left a print copy DNF. Each character had a distinct and recognizable voice without being cartoonish and the pacing and emphasis felt just right. Unfortunately there were some editing errors that made the listening experience less enjoyable--some lines were repeated, and often the silences between paragraphs or even chapter breaks were cut so short it undermined the narrator's pacing. I don't think I'll be rushing to continue reading this series, but I will keep an eye out for future books read by this narrator.
