One of the most significant dates during the reign of the Catholic kings was that of October 12th 1492: the day that Christopher Columbus discovered America. Portugal and Castile (Spain) were very advanced in the exploration of maritime mercantile routes, and Seville, a rich and populous Spanish city, was by then an important commercial center.
