Publisher's summary

Journey deep into the Scottish Highlands in the first memoir by #1 New York Times bestselling author and star of Outlander, Sam Heughan—exploring his life and reflecting on the waypoints that define him

"I had to believe, because frankly, I had come so far there could be no turning back."

In this intimate journey of self-discovery, Sam sets out along Scotland's rugged ninety-six-mile West Highland Way to map out the moments that shaped his views on dreams and ambition, family, friendship, love, and life. The result is a love letter to the wild landscape that means so much to him, full of charming, funny, wise, and searching insights into the world through his eyes.

Waypoints is a deeply personal journey that reveals as much about Sam to himself as it does to his audiences.

insightful

Sam is a likeable person and his book shows how thoughtful and intelligent he is. self growth is a hard thing to achieve and many go through life without even thinking about ways to improve. I enjoyed every moment so much and felt so much during this reading. story telling isn't easy. Sam took his time and thought through what he wanted to say in a meaningful way. I'm glad he decided to share so much of himself and hope all the best for his future.

Waypoints is an inspiring journey!

It was inspiring to listen to Sam’s years of struggle and perseverance until he finally became successful. His soothing tones lead the listener through the mountainous hike as he recounts the tales of his journey as an actor.

Kind of disjointed

The chapter layouts jumping back and forth without warning between the three intertwining stories doesn’t make any sense until you figure out what is going on. I also find the plug for Sam’s alcohol brand towards the end of the book to be a rather crude advertisement that doesn’t really fit the tenor of the rest of the story. Overall, a good read though.

Joyeous says:

Best 7 hours and 47 minutes I've spent in a long time! I've loved the portrayal of Jamie and the timeless qualities he possesses since first watching.
Now we've gotten to know Sam and his genuineness. No wonder he plays the part so well. Thank you, Sam for both the book & each man!!

Looking at life's Waypoints

Sam Heughan is so inspiring. I finished Waypoints today and it is a magnificent achievement of a life so full of love, struggle, doubt, humor, ambitious, talent, perseverance, darkness, and light. A journey of finding one's self identity and the things you didn't know you had in you. Learning to live in the moment and take it in. Of looking to the future of what can be. Learning one's limitations and not placing blame on yourself because you have them. A story of discovery of all of the beauty around you even when it's in your backyard. Not setting a schedule to life because you'll miss the moments in-between. Not taking anything for granted. Not being afraid to speak up and speak out. Being honest in your life and the world around you. Cherishing the moments of privacy when your in the public eye. Seeing how lucky you were growing up even when you grew up without a father. Knowing your imagination is a gift and that talking to yourself can be some of your best conversations. Making friends even if they're mushrooms 🍄 and they're unsure and weary about you. Being grateful for everything you have. When you find rejection and disappoinent use it to come back stronger. Laughing. Cussing. Working jobs to pay the rent even if it's not what you saw for yourself. Never losing your dreams.

Sam Heughan has inspired ME to be more active. Confident. Push myself. Knowing that life can change in the right direction. Outlander has changed my life... it makes me see things differently. I see the beauty in everything. I joined My Peak Challenge because of Sam. In doing so I helped our planet reforest and trive. I would not have booked a plane ticket to Scotland for 2 weeks on my own if it wasn't for Sam and Outlander. I've always dreamed of the magical land but going and affording it... never gonna happen. My mom had a bucket list that I found after she died. On it was get a passport and have passport stamped... she never checked that box but I'll do it for the both of us. I wish she were here... I'd love to have her as my travel companion. I can see us exploring Edinburgh and all Scotland had to offer. But I'm going to have to do it alone. Fitting.

Thoroughly enjoyed the book!

I loved hearing Sam’s journey from his childhood years through the struggles and triumphs of becoming an actor. I love how the story works in tandem with his experience hiking the West Highland Way. Sam is funny, charismatic, relatable, and so interesting to listen to. I’ve loved seeing his work as an actor, but I respect him even more for the vulnerability he shares in this book. Well done, Sam!

Amazing Journey

I’ve enjoyed this book tremendously! I also bought the hard copy. My 1 disappointment is that the hard copy didn’t have enough pictures of this amazing adventure.

Listening to Sam brought him as a person to life. I realized that while I fell in love with Jamie Fraser, Sam Heughan is most love-able as himself.

A great read. I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone.
