Publisher's summary

Sally O'Malley made a promise to her daddy before he died. She swore she'd look after her sister, Troo. Keep her safe. But like her Granny always said, actions speak louder than words. And Sally would have to agree with her. Because during the summer of 1959, the girls' mother is hospitalized, their stepfather has abandoned them for a six pack, and their big sister, Nell, who was left strict instructions to take care of them, is too busy making out with her boyfriend to notice that Sally and Troo are on the loose. And so is a murderer and molester. Highly imaginative Sally is pretty sure of two things. Who the killer is. And that she's next on his list. If nobody will believe her, she has no choice but to protect herself and Troo as best she can, relying on her own courage and the kindness of her neighbors.

REMEMBER

For all who remember playing in the neighborhood until the fireflies went to sleep...this book is for you. The story is both poignant and entreaties. The narration is top notch....You won't want Sky King....Roger and Out to ever come.....

Love it!

Great story, characters, and narrator. Perfectly relatable. The heavy subject matter combined with the innocent and unintentionally funny little girl perspective was beautiful.

I love this book

This book brought back a lot of memories of vacations days in Wisconsin. It made me laugh and cry. Very heartwarming and a story of forgiveness as well.

Loved it

Loved the sayings and references to another time. I remember as a child not understanding the sayings of my parents and grandmothers. Some of the childish misinterpretations of the children made me laugh out loud. Good story and good performance

All the good feelings!

I absolutely loved this book. The approach is reminiscent of To Kill a Mockingbird, delightfully honest (from the mouth of babes), and really funny. A very enjoyable read.

Very odd story

Not much of a mystery, no suspense but the characters were well done by the author. Unfortunately the story line and plot were somewhat vacant. There was some humor from the sisters and I guess this was the best part. Save your money unless you have a heart condition and don’t want to be surprised by anything in this book.

Wonderfully told story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutly. I love this character and how the author told the story from her point of view, showing us the time and setting.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Whistling in the Dark?

I loved all of it, but I guess the introduction to the main characters world was amazingly done. I love the way she thinks.

Have you listened to any of Lesley Kagen???s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Not yet, but I have purchased two of her other books and am waiting anxiously for audible to do 'A Thousand Tomorrows

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

not sure

What a wonderful summer!

Not usually my genre but I am so glad I went on this little vacation. Like summer, I was sad it had to end. Great story of suspense with wonderful bites of humor. Sally is such a wonderful little girl!
