Publisher's summary
The future hangs by a thread. Wisdom and kindness are a luxury. Freedom is balanced against the promise of tomorrow.
Argrave's harrowing journey to the Burnt Desert left him at death’s door, but breathed new life into his group by adding a fresh face to the party… if a severed head on a stick can be considered a proper companion. His goal is in sight within this foreign land with a tradition of hostility, and the royal bastard stands at the cusp of becoming black-blooded.
All of the magic, components, and requisite skills are close at hand. But the closer the team gets to their desires, the tighter the web of impending conflict tightens around them—a web woven with the threads of zealous devotion by the god Fellhorn’s despotic followers. Even with how hard they struggle to succeed, there’s no way to know if the inscrutable, unstable Alchemist will be willing to perform the procedure or eradicate them on the spot.
Just as worrisome is knowing that even if they can convince the Alchemist to take the job, he can demand any price for his services: body, mind, or even soul.

When my sister thrifts an aged map with iridescent lettering leading to a town called Ever, I roll my eyes. According to a quick internet search, the town doesn't exist. We only manage to find it with the help of a sexy gas station owner who offers to come for me if I call him. Swoon. I quickly learn that Shepherd isn't actually human; nobody in town is. News flash—he's a gargoyle—a dominant, possessive, crème brûlée-loving monster. That should terrify me, but something about him keeps me coming back.

Story
The Young Gods Tournament awaits. Only the victors will break through to the worlds beyond the heavens. In an unfair world where a single monster can wipe out an entire village, Thomas is not one of the chosen few. He wasn’t gifted with immense power from the moment of his birth, nor does he have a powerful backer to defend him. By the laws of the world, it’s near impossible for him to rise to the top. But where the god’s themselves have failed him, Thomas will push on and gain the strength to protect his friends, and his home, from the ever rising dangers of the world.

Moves the series along splendidly
My only remorse is that we lose 1 companion of the fellowship in exchange for, er, one and a half. This last side quest is to become black-blooded, a process needed to improve his health and make Argrave more sturdy, something he knows has to occur if he has any chance at defeating the series final boss. There is relationship blooming between Anneliese and Argrave and a rift that develops between Argrave and Galamon that threatens their relationship. The lands they must traverse to acquire the black-blood enhancement is one of the more morbid I've experienced in a long time. Suffice it to say, the price people have to pay to get water in a dessert is extreme.
Luke Daniels' performance was enjoyable.

Good continuation
The main story progresses, with some character growth from our trio. A side adventure that takes up a large portion of the story but does add to the main objective. Overall I enjoyed this one and look forward to the next one.

Slow start, strong finish
Personally for me, I found the first half rather dull, but once you get past a certain part, everything becomes much more interesting. The first part is required for what comes after, but it just felt laborious to get through.
