IN HER OWN WORDS, BRITNEY SPEARS RECLAIMS HER POWER WITH THE WOMAN IN ME

In her recently released essay collection Black Friend, comedian and satirical talk show host Ziwe says it best regarding Britney Spears's infamous conservatorship: "What does it say about a society when one of its most famous women is held captive in plain sight as a result of our collective objectification and dehumanization?" The delicate question has been the subject of much discussion, from the New York Times documentary Framing Britney Spears to the Hulu-hosted TMZ Investigates: Britney Spears: The Price of Freedom and more.

With the release of her memoir, Spears finally weighs in on her own life, and she sets the record straight about everything from her days of early fame to life under conservatorship control, and all the ups and downs in between. Fans everywhere have been waiting for Britney’s take, and finally, at long last, it is here. The emotion in Britney’s voice is palpable as she reads the introduction herself, telling listeners that writing her story has been so "exciting and heart-wrenching" that she decided against narrating the entire work.

Instead, Spears turns over the mic to award-winning performer Michelle Williams who makes her audiobook debut and brings her incredible acting chops to the challenge of depicting one of America’s most famous women. Her narration is clear and calming, bringing a sense of serenity to Spears's incredible story. No stranger to portraying complexity, Williams is known for the depth, gravitas, and sensitivity she brings to her roles including her expert performances in My Week with Marilyn, Brokeback Mountain, and Shutter Island.

An entrancing read

I learned about the tough life ofBritney Spears when the Netflix special aired. I follow her on social media and wanted to read this book for a while now. This is a brave book to write and well done. Delivered on so many levels. From tragedy to survivor to amazing writer. Thank you for sharing.

It was about time!!!

I cried listening to this book. I hope all of the people that played a part in trying to destroy her pay for what they’ve done. She told her story with class. I wish her the best!! I highly recommend this book!!

Didn’t disappoint! #tears

We were taken into her world from her eyes. I’ve cried, I’ve laughed, but most importantly, I’ve feel deep compassion for her. She’s stronger than she knows.

And Michelle Williams did just the most fantastic job narrating!

Amazing!

Just amazing. I’m so sorry she went through all of this but I’m happy to know she is free.

Once I started listening I couldn’t stop.

Beautiful, Sad, Liberating Tale

This book was released today and I’ve already finished it. The story of one of the most famous people in music—in the world—and how she needed help, love, and support, but in turn she was talked down to, condemned, confined, abandoned, and thrown in psychiatric facilities until she listened and let other people control her life. I’m so glad that her conservatorship is over and I only pray that she finds peace and happiness—things she should’ve been able to have all along. I’m happy to have read this in her own words!

To be honest

I thought it was going to be juicier! I think the only thing I didn't already know was the whole abortion thing.

Heartbreaking

Brittney didn’t deserve the treatment she got from her family. Her father is a psycho. Like how was all this legal? I’m glad she’s able to speak her truth and I hope she continues to heal on her own terms. As a fan I understand her not ever wanting to perform on stage again. She deserves kindness and compassion. Thank you for sharing your story.

You did it, Britney!

The book was beautifully written, and it gave a lot of insight into why she is who she is. She’s stronger than anyone would ever understand from reading this book. I cried a couple times.

Well done

It was refreshing and infuriating (because of what she endured) to hear Britney tell her story. Michelle Williams did a phenomenal job narrating. I still felt Britney telling her story through her.

I understand her so much better now

Wow. Just wow. This was profound and I’m so happy she got to tell her story in her own way. I listened all the way through and was very captivated,
