南北朝時代の琵琶法師・覚一(かくいち)が1371年に完成させたといわれる覚一本を、割愛することなく原文のまますべて収録しています。
巻第七は、寿永二年(1183年)四月から七月を描く。勢いにのる木曽義仲軍をおそれた平家一門はついに西国へとおちてゆく。
平家は源氏軍を追討しようとするが木曽義仲に惨敗する。比叡山の僧侶たちにも見限られた平家の衰勢は明らかとなり、平家一門は都を離れ、西国へ下る決意をする。気配を察した後白河法皇は平家から逃れ、身を隠す。住み慣れた邸宅に火をかけ、それぞれの思いを胸に平家一門は次々と都を落ちてゆく。福原にたどり着いた平家一門は旧内裏跡も焼き払い、西国へと船を出すのだった。

作者未詳。『徒然草』に、平家物語の作者は信濃前司行長(しなののぜんじゆきなが)という記述があるが、確証はなく異説も多い。
成立は十三世紀初めごろ。琵琶法師の平曲によって全国に広まったため、巻数や内容の差異があるさまざまな異本が伝わる。当初は三巻本であったが、十二巻本に増補され、さらに灌頂巻(かんじょうのまき)が加わった覚一本が現在ではよく知られている。覚一本は、琵琶の名手・覚一(かくいち)が1371年に完成させたものといわれる。
