光源氏 三七~三八歳

こひしさも悲しきことも知らぬなり
真木の柱にならまほしけれ
玉鬘(たまかずら)に熱心に求婚していた右大将鬚黒(ひげくろ)が突然、強引に玉鬘と結婚してしまった。光源氏は残念に思うが、実父の内大臣(ないだいじん)はこの縁組を喜んでいた。
鬚黒の妻は子を連れて実家へ立ち去る。鬚黒を慕う娘の真木柱(まきばしら)は泣く泣く柱の割れ目に歌を残していくのだった。鬚黒はあわてて妻の実家を訪ねるが妻や娘に会うことはできず、息子たちだけを連れ帰る。
望まぬ結婚にふさぎこむ玉鬘を見かねて、鬚黒は玉鬘の宮仕えを許すが、美しい玉鬘を冷泉帝(れいぜいてい)に近づけることが心配で、結局は玉鬘をすぐに退出させ、そのまま自邸に引き取ってしまう。
源氏を懐かしく思い出す玉鬘であったが、そのうちに鬚黒との間に男児を設け、内大臣は孫の誕生を喜んだ。
